People always seem to talk about how REAL food is best, or WHOLE food. What does this even mean? What could food be apart from real? In some ways UNreal food is better becuase it don't have calories if it dont exist. And the same for whole food... if it isa big packet of something, is eating the whole of it really best?I would say HALF food is better! I just don't understand thes things people say, surely food is food and ll that matter is if you add it up to the right nutiritional and calorie balance. Does anyone else know bout this?#xxxxx

I think when most people say "real food" they mean, as close to it's natural state - so not processed.

For example, you could eat a broccoli, chicken and pasta t.v dinner or you could cook chicken breast, fresh broccoli and whole wheat pasta. Not only are you skipping the additives and sodium but it will taste way, way better.

I believe that "real" or "whole" is referring to foods that are not heavily processed and closer to the form in which you would find them out in nature. For example, an apple is a whole food whereas apple sauce with bunch of added sugar and citric acid to sweeten it up and preserve it, is not. Apple juice with all the fibre removed is not a whole food either. Just think of the number of steps it took to get a food into its present form. The belief is that the more changes and things added, the less likely the food will retain the natural benefits such as vitamins.

The fewer the ingredients, the more "real." A granola bar with 13 different things on the ingredient list would not be considered as real as an apple. Or steamed broccoli. Or roasted carrots. Or an egg.
  • Real as in not processed with a bunch of fillers and crap added that would never qualify as "food" standing on their own.

unprocessed or little processing. As close to natural state as possible. A real meal to me is some meat that I cooked plus fresh vegetables (or frozen) and a baked potato or rice and black beans. Lots of nutrients, lots of protein, keeps me satiated.

Not real food to me is stuff with tons of preservatives that can be nuked,

Whole comes from Whole grains, which is again - less processed!

A lot of things have additives made with crude oil in them also. So I mean as a bonus to eating something highly processed you're also ingesting petroleum that's somehow been altered to taste like something else or be a preservative.

Besides losing nutrients and fiber processed food CAN also be high in suger (or some kind of fruit sweetner) and sodium.

When people talk about "real food" I always think; "As opposed to the plastic Little Tykes stuff my kids had in their toy kitchen?"

Exactly. Studies show that people who eat a whole food / clean diet eat on average 70% less sodium than people who eat processed foods and fast foods.

I eat what you're referring to as real food. Add me and browse my diary. You won't find processed or fast foods in it. :)

ha ha i know whatyou mean... see this is the thing, i sort of get what people mean but surely just because somehing is 'processed' it don't mean it isn't real... you can say that junk food isn't real and doesn't count as anything but surely it DOES count and probably counts for actually far more cals and fat than more home cooked food.

I am slightly unsure about the idea that just cos something prepared and chopped up in factory it is any worse than prepared at home....i think the best thing is to look at the ingredients list and nutrition content and see from there how good it is for you.
