At a standstill because of Sandy....

I feel silly for even posting this but I'm terribly nervous about gaining weight this week....
Before Hurricane Sandy, I was on a very strict regimen. I was working out 5-6 days per week (running 4-5 miles every other day and weight lighting), eating very clean and sleeping well. This week, I haven't been able to exercise and am only able to eat what is left in the house. I'm not eating poorly by far but I'm definitely not eating and exercising the way I usually do. I assume I'm probably eating a few hundred calories more than I usual. On non-workout days, I was consuming 1200 calories and on workout days I was eating about 1350 calories,
When everything is back to normal this upcoming week (I hope), meaning that we have power again and are able to get gas, I will be starting my regimen again. Before this week I had lost a total of 93.5 lbs and only have about 10 to go. So far, I haven't gone backwards in my weight-loss and have only been going forward. I haven't gained even 1/2 a lb since I started. I'm so nervous that this week will ruin my progress. Do you think it will? Will I really gain weight?

Sending you hugs across the oceans.
Maybe look at if there is any volunteer clean up crews you can join during this period - cleaning up is just a good a workout as the gym and may help you beat the the blues you may be feeling due to not exercising.
Be aware of post trama stress as well - Sandy was a once in a lifetime event and this can effect you mentally for a while - similiar to having a car crash. Take care x0 -
You might.
But it's ok. It's not the end of the world. It's simply life. Stuff happens. You just keep going anyway. And that weight will come right back off.
Part of any lifestyle change is learning to be okay when life throws obstacles in our way. Hurricanes happen. We get injured. A family member or loved one gets sick or passes away. We move. We lose a job. We get a new one.
You have done very, very well. There is no way this will "ruin" your progress. It might stall it briefly. But you just pick right up again when things clear up.
Congrats on the loss so far, by the way!0 -
Thank you for the support, I'm trying my best to not beat myself up. I mean, it could have been a lot worse for us where we live and we are making it through0

Sorry you got hit by Sandy. One week can't possibly 'ruin' all your hard work. Unless you eat all day every day.
If you can't do your usual workout, you can at least set yourself a walking program indoors.
There's not much that can't be done at home with a yoga mat and an exercise band.
There are lots of walking videos available online
Any time you take in calories you don't burn off you will gain weight.
How much is under your control.
Without power it'll even help keep you warm.
Congratulations on you losses so far. That's a phenomenal accomplishment!0 -

This really helps, thank you. My fiance told me something similar when I mentioned this to him. I really just want things to get back to normal, you know?0 -
(((hugs))) just remember that you've lost 93 lbs already and there is, of course, no way anything that has happened in the past week as far as your diet and exercise are concerned, that is going to erase that progress. If you hit a momentary stall or even gain a pound, overall that's really no big deal. Considering your circumstances, just do the best you can and when everything is back to normal, you can get back in the swing of things. Hang in there, I wish you all the best.0

Aw, thanks. I'll try my best.0 -
Get out and walk around! See if you can help clean up yards, ect. That will give you some exercise. Good luck to you!!0

Same thing happened to me during hurricane Isaac. I stalled for a week or two, but that was mostly sodium from "shelf stable food" and me forgetting to take my thyroid meds.
After a disaster, it's always best to get back to whatever normal was before it. If you gained, it's okay. Easy on, easy off and it's most likely water weight. You know you'll get back on the horse ASAP, so there's nothing to really worry about.
Just think of your weightloss as a downward trend, not from day to day. Best of luck in your recovery!0 -
don't beat yourself up. life is full of starts and stops. just get back into it.0

Same here, but like so many have said before, it's just a matter of getting back to normalcy. I also use routine as part of my nutrition/workout regimen, but this tragedy obviously supersedes any of that. I definitely ate beyond my caloric goal every day this week, and walking the dog doesn't cut it compared to my usual workouts, but now it's time to re-build and just take things one day at a time until we can bounce back. There may be a pound or two that comes creeping back but that's nothing compared to the fact that your are still healthy. Losing weight is a marathon, not a race so for now take a walk, help a neighbor or just do jumping jacks at home. I'll be heading to SI tomorrow to volunteer, the last thing I'll be doing is counting calories burned, but it'll be a nice side effect.
Once things get back to normal you can continue with your clean eating and workout regimen. And if ever you have a time in the future when you falter, you will have in you mind the fact that you can bounce back, and that is very powerful!0 -
I drove up to NJ to deliver a generator to my sister and her family. I didn't do my routine for two days and I was worried things would be off. I ended up losing 3 pounds this week. Do your best and concentrate on getting things back to normal. You will lose those last few pounds!0

I'm in the same exact position! And I even tried to prepare. I usually jog (my first 5K is on thanksgiving), so i figured I would use my elliptical this week to get me thru the bad weather- well I could not find D batteries anywhere. So that idea was out. I had every intention of jogging while out of work but then with the power being out and the fuel shortage I decided staying in and conserving the gas I had was more important. I have been completely off my game. I'm home. bored. trying not to waste food, and def not eating like I normally do.
All I can say is: life happens. All we can do is what we can do. I decided that come monday i am going back to my routine. even if i don't have work I am going to drive to my usual jog spots. I also want to do some volunteer, clean-up efforts.
So- you're not alone. And we are better off than most since we are on MFP.0 -
Can I ask a question without sounding strange to you - can't you put on your joggers, open your door and go and just jog? Why do you have to drive to a jog spot? Sorry if it sounds facetious, just that I thought it strange you have to drive to a spot to have a jog.0

It really helps reading about others in the same situation. Getting back into my routine is definitely what I need to do. Were you able to start you regimen yet?0 -
Yes, I'll be in the gym later on today and I'm going to pick-up right where I left off. Maybe get a little bit of extra cardio in!0

Don't be so hard on yourself. This week has been terrible for our area and the stress and worry takes its toll in many ways. Relax and get back to your regiment when you can and just chalk this week up to well, Sandy.0
