Strange ridge on my stomach due to obesity

Hey fellow fatties & former fatties: I have this weird thing that happens. I got fat and (if I remember what the doctor said correctly and he wasn't sniffing ether) the fat pulled my abdominal muscles apart so now if I do a traditional sit-up, say, a ridge of guts sticks up, sort of like a long, subtle hernia. He said for the time being I shouldn't do ab exercises per se but wait until I have lost more weight. So far I've lost close to 50, though I have another 50 to go at least.
I presume, though I don't know, that a trainer could help me pull these muscles back together. I have abs from a combination of losing weight, hiking like a weirdo and other stuff, so I'm not worried about neglecting them, but it's something I want to consider long-term. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've not had this but I do know it's reasonably common for women after pregnancy, so it might be worth looking up some post-natal workouts. These should also put emphasis on doing it safely since they're designed for women post-partum.
