Knee Pain... Any Suggestions??

I am a 41 year old female and I have been suffering from knee pain on and off ever since I started running about a year ago. Now it is to the point where I can't even get a good walk in without my knee swelling up and pain/strain in the area of my knee cap.

I went to the doctor and after and x-ray deemed that there were no abnormalities, he diagnosed the swelling as most likely bursitis and put me on anti-inflammatory medication.

Well it has been over a week now and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I desperately want to get back into a regular work-out routine, but I don't want to make things worse...

Anybody else have this issue or any suggestions??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Alsison

That sounds awful. When I started running I got a pain that went from under my foot up through my calf. A few days later it got even worse. I knew it wasn't my shoes because I'd been to a shoe shop and got proper running shoes designed for my over pronation. I stopped running completely for 1-2 months and started strength training. Now I'm back into running I don't get the pain at all and the extra muscle in my legs and back has really helped. Have you had your shoes checked out? You may need to consider a month off from training. I don't believe in working through pain though some people do.

RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) for 14-21 days and then concentrate on "easing" into it (like with a bike or swimming). You should strength train during those weeks.

just an x-ray??? Sounds like you might have soft tissue issues which will not show on a X-Ray ... you might want to ask about an MRI or seeing an Orthopedic surgeon (experience ;) I have had three knee surgeries)

I get this too from over pronation and that I land much heavier on one leg too. I have shoes to compensate for it but sometimes it just doesn't want to play nice, I guess if I don't warm up properly or something one time, then it starts to play up again . When that happens I have to take a break from running, (break from everything until it stops hurting) then ease back in after doing extra strength and low impact things with it like x trainer and swimming. Strangely enough I don't get it with Taekwon-do. Have you had physio look at it or anything?
