He's the guy from "Extreme Makeover, Weight Loss Edition"...

I've seen him interviewed and watched the show many, many times. His advice seems pretty solid:

    Eat healthy & work out.

Kind of like we say here, but he just yells at you to make you do it. LOL :)
  • I absolutely love Chris and his wife Heidi! I used to live near them in Arizona--amazingly sweet people. I'm a big supporter of what he says mostly because I'm a carb-lover. However, I don't just eat carbs at every single meal and not move, I'm an incredibly active person (when I'm not already busy chasing 4 kiddos, one being a newborn). You should check out his books from the library and see if you like what he has to offer before committing to purchasing them if you're that worried. :0)

    right... lol

well i was reading something of his online and hes making it a point to say eat MORE lol...obviously more healthy choices rather than poor choices, but none the less he says to eat more...im considering giving it a try, once i read his book and get a better idea of what i would be getting into.

the one that im interested in is only $15, which isnt too bad...

but im assuming what he says has helped you?
  • That's how I lost 140 lbs prior to this pregnancy (I was placed on bed-rest, it was a dangerous high-risk pregnancy and I gained 70lbs back), going from 318 lbs down to 177 pounds. I ate more, on average 2500-2800 calories a day because I was so active--running 7-10 miles every week day morning, weight lifting/strength training 3 days a week and yoga on the weekends. It worked for me. :0) Hell, I've already lost about 1/2 of what I gained this pregnancy in just the last 4 weeks with minimum exercise (doctor hasn't cleared me for sex, fitness, swimming, etc. postpartum yet) and eating more.

First off, I'd like to say that there is a Choose to Lose (CTL) group here on mfp: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/3335-chris-powell-s-choose-to-lose

Secondly, I don't usually care what Dr. Oz has to say... but this time I have to admit I've drunk the Kool-Aid.

I've battled my weight all of my adult life. You can read my story on my blog here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/babeinthemoon?month=201209. In June I went home to visit my parents. I called my mom ahead of time, and told her that I was willing to do whatever diet she was on. She had just discovered Chris's book, and was starting CTL the next day. So, when I got there she was already on the diet 2 weeks, and was loving it. I found my first 2 weeks very difficult, but I had lost a few pounds while I was there. When I got home in July I really gave it my all. And, well, the rest is history.

I've lost 41 pounds so far. And, I'm exercising... 6 days a week. I hate to sweat, but I'm now doing C25K, and am actually running in the rain! Who is this person?!?!?

In any case, I've done really well, but am starting to think that my weight loss might be slowing down because my activity level has skyrocketed. So, I'm adjusting my calories for at least the first two weeks of November to see what that does. I want to make sure I'm fueling my body enough to be running 25min at a time that C25K will want me doing by the end of the month.

I love "Choose to Lose" because it is finally a tool that I can use to eat healthier. I've cut out most of my processed foods, so that other than my breakfast shake, I'm probably only having one major "processed meal" a day, instead of eating almost all of my calories that way. I'm thrilled with the changes I've made so far, and can't wait to see how far I can take this!

Essentially he wants you to be eating foods that are as close to nature as absolutely possible, in portions that are reasonable. Chris gives you guidelines for what to eat and when that are not dependant on a scale. This was really important in the beginning because I can see what a palm size of protein looks like... and now I've weighed chicken at home enough, that I know that the serving size I usually eat is about 80 g. This is so helpful when I go out to eat at a restaurant!

So, yes, I've drunk the Kool-Aid. If you buy the book, and am thinking "what the heck have I gotten myself into?" Read my blog post about getting started: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/babeinthemoon/view/so-you-want-to-start-choose-to-lose-441366
