Honestly a good brandy or even better a good Scotch. It really does help all kidding aside. It makes your throat feel better and the alcohol in your system (according to my grandfather) so kill germs. (I perfer to believe that old fashion remedy).0

The average cold will go away by itself in about 7 days. Taking *insert remedy here* will shorten that time to about 1 week.
All you can really do is treat the symptoms.0 -
I tried to claim my sniffling was just allergies, but then my tea tasted like water and my kiwi tasted like nothing. It appears I'm catching a cold...anyone have any home or natural rememdies they swear by? For me, it's green tea and honey.
1: Fresh parsley (chopped as fine as possible.)
2: Locally harvested honey.
Put the parsley in a tea kettle and bring to a boil.
Put a little honey at the borrom of your coffee cup
Put a coffee filter over the cup and carefully pour the parsley tea into the cup.
stir and enjoy.0 -

I've heard this for environmental allergies (because the honey will basically give your body small doses of the environmental allergens) but unfortunately mine are pet related so I'm out of luck.0 -

Clever! I know that the average cold is not going to be "cured" especially since they're typically caused by a virus but the tea and honey (or other remedies) help make it more bearable. For me, that counts for something.0 -
I have had great luck with starting Elder berry at the first sign of a cold. I keep a jar of dried berries on hand, and when the sniffles and scratchy throats start:
1/2 cup dried Elder berries
2 cups water
Boil for 30-45 minutes (until liquid is reduced by half). Strain and add:
1 cup raw local honey.
This will keep in the fridge for about 6 weeks. We take a teaspoon or two several times a day or add it to our teas until symptoms go away.
Ginger tea--cut about an inch of ginger root, grate, boil/steep for 20-30 min., add lemon juice and raw honey. Immune boosting, warming, soothing.0 -
Here's an interesting study of the effects of Elderberry on the H1N1 virus:

Thanks! I know my sister in law boils ginger when she starts feeling a cold come on and now I know why. I like the elderberry idea...I'm not a fan of the taste of things like that usually so the idea of taking just a teaspoon or two at a time (half of which would be honey) seems a lot easier!0 -
Elderberry syrup is one of the few things that my kids actually *enjoy* taking. It's pretty good on pancakes or in oatmeal, too.
Raw garlic is also immune-boosting. I'll make a batch of hummus with 3-4 cloves and eat that over a couple days with raw veggies.0 -
when i start to sneeze or it's flu season....I eat an orange everyday....I will also have tea with honey and lemon....0
