Anyone heard of Striiv

Looking at getting something to measure my activity? Anyone heard of Striiv? I found this article but want feedback. I don't want anything with a monthly service fee to use. Comments and suggestions please!

STRIIV ($100) The Striiv may encourage even the most rooted sofa spud. Designed with the sedentary in mind, it is an ultra-simplified device that offers rewards and challenges to motivate users and keep them active.

The touch-screen device, about the size of a pack of Tic-Tacs, starts up with a jaunty song and a video with directions, though you hardly need them to operate it. Set-up is easy, and from there you wear it or carry it in a pocket to measure your steps when walking, running or climbing stairs. It was the one device tested that did not need to be synced with a computer.

Striiv has a number of ways to keep people engaged. It gives out trophies and points for accomplishments, like your record number of stairs climbed, and points can also be used to play MyLand, a game in which users build and explore an animated world.

Finally, you can choose one of three charities to receive a donation based on your activity (you’ll have to sync to a computer to make this happen). Walk 60,000 steps to immunize a child against polio. Fewer steps help provide clean water in South Africa or save a patch of rainforest. The Striiv is unique in that it offers both carrot and stick — it occasionally offers challenges, like “Do three minutes of activity.” Accept and you get a bonus 3,000 points; decline and you lose 300 points.

I have never heard of it. Sounds similar to the Fitbit but I like the idea of donations going to charities.

There are a few threads on here if you do a seRch. Note that they are now bringing out the Play which does not have the screen. It's similar to the fitbit but you view most stuff on an app. You need iPhone 4S,5 or ipad 3. This doesn't have donating feature. I've emailed them to ask if the original will continue if you don't have one if those phones and if they are planning to let you donate on the app but waiting to hear back.

You can donate using fitbit on the 'earndit' website.

The app can be used with the phone but will your battery last all day and do you always have your phone with you? The devices don't require you to have your phone with you all the time.

However, I trialled the app and decided the game wasn't that motivating for me so I decided not to bother buying the device. I think pedometers on phones aren't as accurate as devices such as STRIIV devices and fitbits.
