can it be--real loss this week

I have been bothered because I have not been able to lose weight in about 6 weeks. When I write it, it doesn't seem long, but I'm impatient and thought I'd lose something. So, I weighed today after some changes in behavior from weeks past. For one, I exercised mainly through household chores and a little cardio, but not too much. Then I drank only 8 to 10 glasses of water. I ate breakfast a little earlier and I reduced the number of grain carbs I ate to only two a day. What I discovered is that I could easily eat the 1200 calories recommended, plus some of the exercise ones, I came closer than I ever have to eating the carb, fat, protein levels suggested, and I'm down 5 pounds. I really feel like I've started over or something so that I'm experiencing that initial big loss. I did go back to review the suggestions from other weight loss programs, like WW, and decided to try the fewer grain carb thing. For me, two a day seems to be adequate, along with a fruit serving, and then at least 5 cups fo some kind of vegetables. It worked this week, I'm going to try it again. Today I feel---lighter, in more ways than one.

Congratulations, that's wonderful!
So grain carbs, meaning whole grain carbs?
What are some examples of the grain carbs that you are eating twice a day?
Just curious.0 -
Yay!!! Doesn't it feel good?!?! Sometimes, we just have to keep tweaking until it works for us. Way to go!0

I eat only whole grain bread, pasta, cereal etc. A traditional day would include a mini bagel or oatmeal or cereal for breakfast AND a sandwich or wrap for lunch AND one oz of chips for a snack AND a special K bar for late snack AND pasta or rice at night. Believe it or not, if I measured everything and ate only one serving, along with 300-600 calories for exercise I was generally UNDER the carb count, even if I ate two servings of fruit and the rest in veggies. I switched to only two of the grain/starch carbs and one fruit a day, bumped the veggies to 5 cups in either salad or snacks or side dishes, and it worked. Yesteday I had a dinner roll and a potato. The day before, oatmeal and rice. The day before, pasta and cold cereal. More like that. I cut back from two fruits to one, also. When I looked back at my WW and South Beach diet notes, that was closer to what I was eating before and I lost almost 40 pounds in 5 months. Every body is different and you just have to keep trying until you find the perfect combination for you, or for me. I'm very happy and hope to see another 5 pound loss in the next couple of weeks.0 -

Isn't it just wonderful to have a break-through?

Most people I know refer to 'carbs' as bread, cereal, pasta, rice. Which is true, they are. But carbs are found in everything, including fruits and vegetables, and even dairy. My small red potato contained 27 gr of carb and my 2 cups of green beans contained 14 gr. Vegetables are generally grouped into two categories: high starch (potatoes, corn, carrots) and something else (I don't really know what that is and it's different depending on the plan you look at). Both WW and South Beach suggest limited amounts of the starch and grain types of carbs. My WW plan allowed for only 3 servings a day and phase two of South Beach says only one grain/starch a day and one fruit--the idea is to increase it slightly at two week intervals until you reach a level where you no longer lose weight, then reduce it back to where you were so you can continue to lose. A typical day for me would include 6 servings of the grain/starch types of food and I was not losing weight. I cut back to only two a day of those and one fruit and, not only did I actually get closer to my carb requirement, but I lost weight. Where I made up the difference is that now I'm eating 5 cups of vegetables a day instead of my usual 1/2 cup plus two cups of salad mix.0

Great work! I usually try to keep my starchy food consumption low as well and I usually only eat one serving of a "grain" carbo a day. I add flax to my diet to help with the whole grain thing.
Just one question.... You listed carrots as being grouped in the starch category. I've never seen it referred to as such, can you tell me where the info came from? Just curios.
Again, congratulations on seeing some movement. I think you have really hit on what is the key to successful healthy eating for weight loss, in that we all have to tweak our diets to find what works for our bodies.

carrots and peas are on the SBD list as things to avoid in the beginning but I think it's because both are high in sugar?? it seems that's what I'm remembering about them. Beets are on the same list and that's where some sugar comes from so it must be related.
My husband actually told me if I was bored to go back to school and we have a new extension of a University in town so I think I'm going to checkinto being a dietician or nutritionist or something like that.0 -
i think i remember that from the south beach diet also
GREAT JOB on the weight loss:happy:0
