You will lose X amount of lbs in 5 weeks...

I know people ask about this function a lot on MFP and I'm no newbie so I understand the whole thing about weight loss not being linear blah blah.

I was just wondering, is it possible to lose MORE weight than what MFP is predicting within a 5 week period? It's saying I will weigh 51.8kg in 5 weeks time but I was hoping to hit 50kg in 4 weeks time (which is apprx 2lbs a week so it is healthy).

Is MFP right, am I doomed to fail to reach my target in my set time frame? Or should I just continue to ignore the silly little number it spits out at me at the end of every day?

Well since that is MFPs prediction is based on you doing exactly what you did that day every day for 5 weeks I would say it's really just a best guess on where you could be in 5 weeks. So no you are not "doomed to failure" nor are you guarenteed of success. Do the work, track your food, stay within your calorie goals, and move your body and you will see results. Perhaps not as quickly as you would like, maybe faster than expected.
  • I felt discouraged by the prediction as well....until I added in my exercise and ate the calories that we readjusted for me. THEN the little indicator said I would be 5 pounds lighter in 5 weeks. That made my day :) And so I am going to continue to do what it says and will let you know in 5 weeks!

Start with the understanding that it is basing its estimate on you doing what you did that day, every day. So if it is always saying that you will be 51.8 or more in five weeks, then what you are doing is not going to get you to 50 in 4 weeks. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but if your estimates are always higher, you need to do something different.

every "body" is different, the easy answer is yes, you could lose more. This however is completely variable on you, your metabolism, how much of a deficit you eat at, how active you are, your age, how much sleep you get, how hydrated you are, how much you have to lose overall, medication you may be taking, medical conditions you may have diagnosed or undiagnosed, etc. MFP can just give a best guess and often the result is slower than the prediction, so just don't put a lot of stress on the number and focus on a consistent lifestyle change and it will happen for you.

I almost always lose more than MFP predicts (and I've been at this since May) :)
