Losing weight when it's always been consistent

My body type has always been thick but athletic, and losing is slloooowww process. Seems like quick weight loss happens more for folks who put weight on in recent years, getting back to a slimmer physique they had before.
Thoughts? Do you think that it's easier for people who have only recently put on weight to lose it than for people who have always been heavier?
