When I started on here in February I put my settings at wanting to lose 2/lbs a week. I don't really remember any of the other info it asked or why I came to the conclusion that I need to eat 1200 calories. I've been logging here religiously for about two months and have lost 14lbs so I'm not too worried that I'm doing things wrong but I don't want to do any harm to my body by not eating enough. I recently heard about tdee on a message board here and calculated mine, it said I should eat 2,429 calories. Is that what I would need to maintain my current weight? (169lbs, 5'7" (GW:140)) am I eating too few calories if I eat 1,200/day? Any insight is helpfull, thanks!

It told me to start with 1200 as well, but I reset it with 1500 and will work my way down to 1200 (dropping 50 cals every 7 lbs lost) I knew I would lose weight at that amount, and I would be more likely to stick to it. I couldn't manage with 1200 (Although some days I do eat that much, but its coincidental. So far going well0

Google TDEE, there's all kinds of calculators. TDEE is the calories that theoretically you burn in a day depending on your activity level. The more important number is your BMR. You don't want to eat under that regardless of what MFP says. MFP is just a calculator, it spits out numbers based on what you tell it. The common sense part is up to you.
Find out both numbers, then pick something between your BMR and your TDEE.0 -

I wondered this too. I found this site, which I found very helpful.

My calories are still lower than it suggests, but it's interesting to see.0 -
Yes, eating at your TDEE is for maintaining your current weight. Using your TDEE of 2429, to lose 1 lb/week = 1929 cals; to lose 2 lbs/week = eat 1429 cals.0
