Group Exercise (not yoga) with no gym shoes??

I don't know who all has heard of "PILOXING", but if you have not look it up at www.piloxing.com. If you have, or have not, I am still wondering about this no shoes thing, because maybe it applies to other group fitness classes as well. Apparently my instructor (who is a master instructor and is AWESOME) went to a recent national training where they were told that there was new research stating that not wearing gym shoes and just wearing these special gripped socks will help with your muscle development and balance. I haven't done any research myself, I was just wondering if anyone else knows anything about these new developments, and what is your opinion on this? I personally am not ready to go the no gym shoes route yet, but maybe as I get better I will. Thoughts???

Interesting research. Not too familiar with Piloxing other then the obvious mix of boxing and pilates that the title implies. I take kettlebell/pilates combo and I do it barefoot. But in my classes the ones that aren't barefoot are wearing grippy socks or the Vibram shoes. I tried the grippy socks once but I preferred barefoot and have no problems with it.

So you prefer barefoot to the socks? Do you do any classes where you are wearing shoes and do you notice a difference?

At this particular studio I don't wear shoes at all and I don't notice a difference and there is cardio and jumping involved. I do have have an exercise mat and the floors are cushioned. The socks were okay but I just felt like it made it harder to grip and lead to sliding versus not wearing them. For regular stuff like bodypump or regular gym activities I do wear shoes. Are other people in class not wearing shoes?

I just pulled up a couple of piloxing videos and the classes looked mixed as far as shoes optional or not.

There are some other people not wearing shoes in the class. The majority of us are still wearing shoes though. Thanks for the info! Just curious what is "kettlebell"?

No problem. Surprised no one else chimed in. http://youtu.be/wdnZgvvhaL4 That's a link to the type of classes I take but I guess the best way to describe it is it's a weighted ball with a handle. If you ever get a chance definitely try it. I am going to be on the lookout for a piloxing class in my area cause that looks fun.
