Which is better for monitoring calories burned in exercise, a FitBit (in which case, which one) or a Polar FT40M?
Or, are they not analogous?

Many thanks - as a result of a Google search on the "Polar HRM fitbit" reference, which confused me, in the first reply I found that this question has been addressed before and that it is like comparing sausages and bacon - both are very nice in their own way but not necessarily alternatives and may even go well together.
Thankyou for your replies. Now I know Santa needs to pack on his sleigh0
