overactive thyroid medication

Options
I have an overactive thyroid (Graves Disease) and take 5 mg Methimazole each day. I have gained 30 lbs. since starting this medication three months ago. I joined the gym two months ago and work out two hours per day , six days a week. I have not lost any weight whatsoever, nor have I lost any inches. I watch my calorie intake and am doing everything right. Is this medication causing my inability to lose weight? My doctor doesn't think so...he says to reduce my calorie intake more. I stay within 1700 calories. What can I do to lose weight?

Do you see a specialist for the thyroid problem? With over active thyroid people tend to be thin. If you see just a primary doctor, I'd ask to a specialist and see what they have to say. I have under active and that is part of my weight, (plus my love of food) problem. I was on medication for stress and my doctor told me that can cause weight retention so he changed it and I have had a lot less cravings and weight loss. So medication can cause problems. Check with the pharmacy and see what they have on that medication for side effects. Good luck. :flowerforyou:

I recall my mother-n-law (May she rest in peace) had hyperthyroidism and her meds kept her from taking weight off. Even though you couldn't keep up with her  with her high-energy. She wore me out to be around her  .

I agree that maybe - if you are not seeing a specialist - that you seek out a second opinion from a specialist or another one.
