Had a coke yesterday and...

I think it made me really hungry? Is that what soda does? I haven't been drinking pop at all. But yesterday, I was just really craving one, had plenty of room for it in my calorie budget and decided to go for it. Problem was, after I had it, I was raving hungry for the rest of the day? I've never had to fight to stay under my calories before!! Is that something Soda does to you? Or am I just insane

They make me super thirsty when I have a regular one. So perhaps it makes me hungry and I think I'm thirsty or vice versa.

    Maybe it was the sugar.
  • The sugars in the coke may have tricked your body into wanting something more...

I always crave bad food when or after drinking diet coke. Could be a chemical thing or from past history which has developed into habit. Water seems to be the way to go for me.

It just makes me thirsty, so I drink more.

Soda -- Coke, to be specific -- is very high in carbs and sugars. It is probably like eating a slice of bread and triggering being more hungry (at least, that happens for me, I'm a total carb junky!). I've heard that diet coke triggers wanting sugar because of the sugar substitute. Maybe try drinking water before or after you drink it if you're drinking it for pleasure rather than thirst in an effort to fill you up!

I've been told it's the caffeine that makes you hungry again.

It's the sugar. Anytime you eat anything with a high amount of sugar and hardly any fat or protein, you will feel hungry. Try an experiment after you eat a very big dinner. Drink a sugary drink, and magically, even though you felt full immediately before, you're brain will tell you that you are hungry again. This is where you really have to take control and ask yourself, "is this my belly talking, or just my head talking?"

Caffeine is an appetite SUPPRESSANT, not a stimulant. Why do you think people who IF suck down coffee all day?

Your best bet it to minimize sugar in all aspects of your diet to cut down on cravings. Beware, fake sugars have the same effect, so a diet coke will make you feel just as hungry, not to mention might give you cancer.

No, not true. Caffeine suppresses appetite.
