question about sodium

I am confused.
Whenever someone posts that they haven't lost weight for a certain amount of time (more than a few days), someone inevitably suggests that the poster cuts down on their sodium, or suggests that that's the culprit for the lack of weightloss.
I was under the impression that sodium may cause water retention for a few day, but that it didn't inhibit weightloss, so that even if someone was eating at a deficit and consuming a lot of sodium, eventually the scale would move anyway because they'd be losing fat, while retaining a few pounds of water.
why is sodium intake a factor for someone who has been dieting for a few weeks and not losing?

It typically is not. Mostly myths and lack of understanding of electrolyte balances.0

You're correct. Most people on MFP just repeat what they've heard other people say.0

This is completely bogus and you know it.
What people actually do is take something they've heard said on MFP a few times before, and then slightly tweak some of the variables to fit their own personal views, and then say it as if it were gospel. And as was demonstrated in a recently conducted study ("A Study of Dissemination of Information on MFP" (2010)), they'll sometimes even make up support for their position.0 -
As for OP, yeah, I don't get it either. The solution to their recent lack of weight loss is to do something that creates a temporary, fictitious weight loss? For what purpose?0

yeah, that's the other thing... even if the OP hasn't lost for a few days, suggesting that they reduce sodium will only reduce their water weight, not produce fat loss. I mean, yes, it will make the scale move, but as soon as they have more sodium, the scale will go up again.
it's not a long term solution. just a temporary (few day) solution.0
