calories & protein

I have only being doing this for 10 days, but I haven't actually changed my diet except cutting out unhealthy snacks. I have found that my calorie intake is nearly always below my daily goal, but my protein is above. Apparently I eat too much protein, help please...what are good things to eat that aren't so high in protein?

Protein is good, I'm always over xxx
  • MFP's default protein setting is incredibly low. There are a lot of people who get 40% of their daily calories from protein and actually find it beneficial to their weight loss.

Protein helps you build muscle. So if you're exercising the protein will help you build muscle which will increase your fitness level and help boost your metabolism - all good things.

Just watch your fat intake since some protein sources (like red meat) can be high in fat. But don't worry about being over for protein - I usually am also.
  • This is a relief, I was wondering why I am always way over on my protein, but down on calories. As long as this is a good thing, I am happy! I try to always follow a low carb diet, which ultimately means upping the protein!
  • higher protein, lower food cravings... don't knock it!!

Yeah going over on protein is fine. MFP sets it super low to beging with. If your doing any resistance training then having a higher level of protein will help you recover much faster
  • Thanks, everyone! Appreciate the responses.

I think I love the OP for asking this question. I'm consistently over on my protein but I still have hundreds of calories to go. Today I have 200 left to break neutral but had -3 grams of protein left before my walk. MFP is telling me that I absolutely need to increase my calorie intake or risk slowing my metabolism. I don't do a lot of resistance training so I don't need tons of extra protein, but I would absolutely love some suggestions for late-night low-protein snacks to fill out my day. I would so rather not have to drink a can of root beer just to increase my calorie intake.

The only downside to too much protein in the ratio is the low low carbs...which is awesome for weight loss, but can be killer for energy depending on where you are in your weight loss journey. As long as you have enough energy throughout the day, go protein!

Also, to above poster, if you're having trouble getting in protein, cut back on breads/pastas/potatoes and add in chicken, turkey, and really any meats, dairy, or eggs. You'll be good to go!
