Do you judge people by their tickers?

Just curious. If you see someone give weight loss advice, does the amount of weight their ticker says they lost influence your opinion of that advice? Do you disregard someone who's lost 2 pounds but agree with the person who lost 95? I look out of curiosity, but I doesn't effect my opinion of the post. If the number is low, the person may not have much weight to lose, or maybe they lost a lot of weight before coming to MFP. What do you guys think?

I think experience and results do certainly speak to credibility. Ultimately though, everyone is different. What worked for me may not work for you.

No, I don't judge them by their tickers, because from personal experience, even 1 lb can be a pain to lose! And god knows what other life stuff that person has to overcome to lose those lbs.

I realize too that some people reset their tickers once they reached their goal and do another goal.

I actually never notice the tickers... there are a lot of people here that only maintain .. Some have been here over 2 years .. they're not trying to lose anymore .. some are new and only trying to lost 5-10 lbs that snuck up on them ..

I wouldn't go by their ticker .. .. you don't know if that person has been up and down the road a few times .. and maybe their goal this time isn't what it was 5 years ago. They may not need to lose so much weight. Maybe they lost 250 lbs in the past .. deactivated their account .. and have come back to only lose 20 lbs.

Don't judge by a ticker .. it certainly doesn't reveal the whole person ..their whole life journey .. or what is current .. at least .. not for everyone! :flowerforyou:

Honestly it depends on if I agree with them or not. Most of the time I don't even notice the tickers, but if I really disagree with something someone says I look at their ticker and can be a bit judgmental about it.
  • All the above.

Many incredibly knowledgeable people have lost weight and reset their tickers, showing a very small (1-3lb) or zero pound loss. Many people do not need to lose weight yet still offer tons of incredible advice. You should not take advice solely from those with massive loss tickers, if you do, you are missing out on some fabulous knowledge.

I just listen to what makes sense to me. I don't think you can really judge people by their ticker because maybe they only came here to lose 15lbs or gain a healthy amount of pregnancy weight or something like that and their advice can be just as valid as someone who came here to lose 150lbs. As long as it is sensible, not a dieting gimmick, sounds healthy and can be backed up by googling valid sources, I'm completely willing to listen whether that person has lost 2lbs or 200.

No, cause you have a number of people who go through a number of bulking and cutting cycles.

Nah, I usually don't even pay attention to tickers (maybe because it's been so long since mine moved ).

no because i am posting this to see what mine says. all i know is it's a crossfit logo. i don't update mine. no reason to judge others based on how much weight they have to lose/have lost

edit to say: now that i see my ticker. i actually gained 3 lbs! lol! woopsies ;) guess that happens when you build muscle.

I believe people that have a ton of weight to lose, lose weight differently than people who have, say, 20 lbs to lose. If I am looking for suggestions, I look for people who have lost a similar amount of weight as me. I generally look for professional references for credable sources. I do kind of scoff when people that havent lost anything give, what I think of as, stupid advice.

    This ^.

But... I do have to admit if it says someone has lost like 70lbs I will read their stuff a bit more thoroughly, even look at their profile to see if they had similar start/goals to my own, more as "yeah it's possible, they did it, I can do it too" type motivation than what they say is gospel.

    No.
  • Yes... I admire how much smarter they are than me... I don't know how to make a ticker. Someone else made me one and I don't even know if it's still there... Waiting to push 'post reply' to see if it's still there!

Nope, people with tickers are WAY smarter than me!

Just because you haven't lost a lot of weight doesn't mean you can't be knowledgable about something. Many of us aren't so good at taking our own advice!

It plays a small role in my mind, but is not in and of itself a deal maker/breaker.

Personal experience: when I first started my ticker reflected weight loss since I joined MFP. When I finally figured out how to change to reflect loss in the few months before joining (extra 20+ #), people "seemed" to give more weight (pun intended) to my advice.

How DO you do that exactly? I lost some weight before coming here and never could figure out how to put that on my ticker...

    Nope because why?

    I have lost 60lbs since Jan 10th...

I needed new motivation, so reset my ticker...
    '
All my logs, weight values are stored on site if need be, but tickers are for me... and for MY motivation, personally, and no offence intended, but screw everyone else.

This is ultimately MY journey.... I have friends on here whom I trust and love, random people who I have not yet met, don't matter.

    As a saying goes...

Those that care don't matter and those that matter don't care.

I mean logically speaking, in my view if I cared about tickers and about my own opinion so much, I wouldn't have reset it after 2/3 months at a stable weight now would I? I mean for god sakes, 60lbs is an awesome achievement, I do not even look the same... but at same time, it is personal... It is ME... You do not wanna listen to me and my success, then fine, that is YOUR problem not MY problem.

So in conclusion, no... I do not judge people by their tickers.. It would be quite hypocritical of me to do so considering what I did with mine wouldn't you agree?

Besides I treat myself as a laboratory... I test theories, keep those that work, throw out those that don't... :) all works out in the end :)

you can go to check in, edit previous entries, then edit your very first entry to your heaviest weight (instead of the weight you started using this site as)

    Precisely.

  • My opinion never declines by what I see on tickers, but it can get heightened by what I see. For instance, joeysox instantly made me impressed by having L from Death Note added to their ticker. That's just my personal bias towards things I like. I also get excited when someone is in a similar situation to me, or has accomplished what I am trying to.

Most of the time I don't notice the ticker; I read everything with a grain of salt and then if I think its total whack...I ignore it; if its border line or even for other reasons, I will do my own research so I can make a better judgment on if it is good advice or not.

Occasionally I will see a reply that points out someone's ticker...then I have to go back up and look at it.
