speaking from experience, be careful. Shin splints will get worse if you don't figure out why you are getting them and try to fix that cause. The best thing to do is rest and ice and ibuprofen for now. But shin splints are a small tear in the muscle lining and continued stress to the area will cause more damage over time.
I would get to a PT to figure out what is causing it. For me, it was that my feet pronate (roll in) and I needed shoe inserts, special running shoes and lots of exercises to strengthen my calves and ankles. It might be similar or different for you. But a big cause is doing too much, too fast and too soon.
also, remember to stretch your calves more that you usually would. Often runners get shin splints because they are getting such strong calves and that strength is unbalanced on your legs and puts more strain on the muscles on the front of you legs (usually anterior tibialis or posterior tibialis)
I hope this helps and I hope that you find some comfort and the pain goes away. Good luck

Shin splints are usually caused from landing hard on your heels. Shorten your stride and make sure to land midfoot. Good shoes that are fitted to your gait are really important to give your foot the support it needs.

You can improve your shin muscles by doing toe raises or stand with just your toes on the edge of a step and lifting yourself up and down.

Some one posted about this awhile back and there was a link to a website with some good advice. Sorry I can't find it just now. The best thing that has worked for me is toe lifts, and making sure to stretch lots, before and after walking or running.

    OK here is the link

    This really did help

Also, try searching this site and you will find pages upon pages of info about how to avoid or treat shin splints.

I bought running shoes from a store that specializes in them. I tried on 3 pairs of shoes and chose the ones that felt best. I used them for about a week and had horrible shin splints. I called the store and spoke with the man that sold me the shoes. He told me to come back in so I could find a different pair. I found a pair that cost $20 less and did not give me shin splints.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, it might be your shoes.
