Adjusting for BMR

After talking to a few folks (nutritionist and trainer at my gym) we came to the conclusion that I have not lost any weight in nearly 30 days despite dieting and working out nearly every day because I was not taking into consideration my BMR....and therefore was practically starving myself. So, I've added the calories necessary to account for my basal metabolic rate based on my height, weight, and activity level.
Does anyone else do this and does it work for them?
