Is it really necessary to have one of these after a workout? My old trainer used to tell me I should have a protein shake after weight lifting. Thoughts?

Not necessary at all. If you can meet your protein requirements by eating real food, then that's the best bet. If you can't meet your protein requirements, then it is a good idea to look into a protein powder to supplement what you are missing from your diet.0

I always take a post workout shake.
1 large banana
40g of porridge oats
25 of protein isolate
Total:
25g sugar
25 low GI carbs
25g of protein.
