I'm currently on Coumadin (and will be so for the rest of my life). I know the doctors had always said in the past that weight loss or gain was not recommended while on this medication. It's hard enough to regulate that I wondering what kind of affects significant weight loss could as a reaction to the meds. Anyone else ever successfully lost weight while on thinners? Did you have any side effects?

  • Hi.. i'll take a stab at this... I have no experience with it, but I am a pharmacist.... so.. here goes...

did they talk to you at all about your diet changes??? the key to blood-thinners is usually consistency. So people who try and lose weight often switch to salads and veggies, which have larger amounts of vitamin K than other foods, and therefore can cause your INR to drop... which isn't good... but as long as you are consistent in your diet (i.e. don't eat a huge salad one day a week and then go without green leafy veggies for the rest) they should be able to adjust your dose accordingly... you might just need INR checks done a little more frequently than normal. I would discuss your weight-loss goals (and methods) with whoever regulates your INR and they should be able to work with you!
