Anti-Speedo Hysteria - what's the beef with the brief?

I don't get it!
I used to be a swimmer in school and have lost a significant amount of weight - partly because of swimming. I sit on the Board of a youth swim league and last night we were deciding on team swim suits. When it came time for the boys suits the women - who all have girls on the team - immediately said "jammers". I asked them why not Speedos and their response was "That's just disgusting" or "Nobody wants to see all that" or "Kinda gross, really."
Really?
Women's suits keep getting smaller and men's suits are now like pants - cold sloggy pants. I still see male athletes - whether in Triathlons, Open - water races or indoor swim competitions wearing them. So apparently these stellar athletes are "disgusting" or "gross"? I guess I'm fairly apathetic to peoples' attire when swimming as a whole but now that I look good in a speedo again (according to my wife who wouldn't let me leave the house if I didn't and who's opinion I care about) I wear them for their intended purpose - you guessed it - swimming.
If I'm at a pool lounging I wear swim trunks but for lap swimming it's a brief. So I guess the question is: what's the beef with the brief?

Don't know either. They're functional so I have no problem. In the US, it has a lot to do with our historical roots and our over sensitivity to anything that might be construed as sexual.0

Most olympic swimmers wear short length jammers
Women swimmers wear full suit jammers.
They are faster.0 -
Not sure why this trend has popped up. I swam competitively for 15 years and coached after that for another 7. All my boys wanted to wear jammers. But some of my fastest male swimmers wore briefs and called it good. Not sure. But a lot of Olympians wear jammers. It's a faster suit. And easier to constrict to the body.0

All the swimmers in my high school (boys, obviously) wore Speedos. I had and have no issue with it.
Now, the overweight, harry Europeans wearing them at the Disney water parks are a bit disturbing.0 -

I can see your point but the funny thing is jammers are nothing more than Speedos with legs. When did mens' legs become offensive? Men's have penises - fact! Whether we wear Speedo brief or Speedo jammers you still see the whole package. It's part of life.0 -

WHAT?????!!!!!!
Also, why were Speedos in the US not a problem 20 years ago if it's the prudishness of the country? Are we becoming more prudish?0 -

True. No problem with whatever someone wants to wear. Do I judge initially if I see that, or a huge woman in a bikini? Initially yeah but then I remember to stop being a jerk and let people do what they want to do. Oh well.0 -

That's nice. They can wear it because they don't have to see it.
I believe in dressing the body you have, not the one you want.0 -

So, with that said, should I be wearing a speedo brief or jammer?0 -
jammers are faster.0

You said it was a 'youth' swim league. I find that a lot of kids are pretty modest these days. My 13-yo probably would have agreed with them.0

former college swimmer, current triathlete.
speedos are gross.
i don't want the world to know my junk has sideburns.0 -
Have you ever seen a ripped high school boy in a speedo?? I have not, as that would be a violation of my probation, but I bet the ladies were just worried about getting the vapours.0
-
I'm okay with them.
I can watch the boys college swim team warm up from the weight room.0 -
if you've ever been to Cuba, you will know that almost all the elderly European men wear them...saggy skin and all..with their proudly accompanied topless elderly wives...
(shudders and rebleaches her eyes)
speedos are evil...
that's all....and now I can't see one without that other mental image that I can not unsee replacing it in my mind....0
