Watch videos on youtube to get a good sense of proper form for lifts ( try to watch many sources - the home videos usually suck).

Because chances are, if you're form is ****ty someone is probably laughing on the inside a bit (like I do when I see people do quarter squats for an absurd amount of weight)

I started this just about 6 weeks ago and i have noticed a big change in my body! haven't lost any lbs yet (have not been sticking to the diet as much...), but i've lost inches and my face, neck and arms look noticeably different. i highly recommend trying it.
    check out this website:
    http://www.stumptuous.com/category/training/dork_to_diva
she shows how to do all the different weight lifting exercises (beware, there is some *salty* language on the site!) with photos, videos and good explanations.
i get intimidated in the weight room sometimes. but i recommend sticking with it and pretty soon your confidence will be up.
    you can do it!!
    good luck.

on dropping the weight. . .

Once I literally fell on my *kitten* doing squats. luckily it was only the bar, since I was just warming up, but it made a hell of a crash when it but the safety pins. I laughed, racked the bar, ducked back under it and started again.A couple people looked, but I just ignored them. Hasn't happened often though. and women tend to be timid in picking their weights and not try to lift more than they really can.

Then stop thinking about elipticals and go continue your journey to awesomeness :)
  • My gym (YMCA) has a program called ActrivTrax that I am going to give a go. I've only done it once with a wellness coach (I don't feel sore :( so therefore I feel like I didn't do anything) but it was only my first time and it's still trying to figure out where I am strength wise.
