Macro questions

Hello friends, I hope I can get some answers about my macro goals.

I currently have mine set to 50/25/25, but I really struggle to get my carb intake higher. The result is that i hit my calorie goal for the day but can have 20g of extra protein and fat for the day. If my body doesnt need that much, will it be converted to simple carbs to be used for the necessary functions, or because its in excess will it just be stored in fat cells?

I have close to 200 cals for the rest of the day to try to get my carbs up. What are some food suggestions?

Looking forward to the responses.

From what I've read around the internet (take this as you will, who knows what is true!) that carbs are just sort of what is left after you reach your fat and protein goal.

You seem to be doing it just fine to me, eating a goal amount of protein / fat and then just putting whatever other calories into carbs is totally ok.

Those people who do extremely low carb diets... they don't worry about carbs and they seem to be ok. My guess is you will be too.

    My macros are 70/15/15.
rice, quinoa, polenta, whole grain pasta, beans, all other legumes, ... So many good sources of carbs :-)

..... except they don't do OK. They can suffer from all sorts of negative side-effects.

But it sounds like the OP is not purposefully restricting carbs, so I don't think that's an issue. 50% is a good amount.

Most people have protein and fat minimums they try to hit (most calculate protein intake to maintain or build lean body mass) and then just fill the rest with carbs. I low carb only because it helps me stay away from bread and pasta which I tend to overeat.

Is that 25% protein, 25% fat and 50% carbs?

I eat somewhere around 100g carbs each day.. I eat a lot of protein and make sure I get enough healthy fats- most of my carbs are just "tag-along carbs" (they tag along with whatever protein/fat source I eat that day like nuts, avocado, etc) or come from vegs. I wouldn't worry about hitting a particular carb macro. Like PP said, hit your fat/protein, fill up the rest with (mostly) complex carbs. :-)

Fruits, vegetables, rice, oats, popcorn.... These are carb sources as examples.

You will not increase net fat stores in a calorie deficit.

Switch to Carb/Protein/Fat being 40/30/30 instead... it will make it a little easier for the carbs but harder for the protein intake.

That is correct! I basically focus on protein and Fat then whatever is left over is carbs, though it seems impossible to hit in the 150-200 range. I will do a stir fry with rice to bring it up today.

John, I may just switch to 40/30/30 because I'm getting a lot of protein daily.

Thanks for the responses, any other thoughts are welcome.
