Dad's Birthday= Fish & Chips? Healthy Options??

Tomorrow is my dad's birthday and I want to treat him. He is not the kind of guy to go to restaurants or pubs, and he suggested he wanted to go and get some Fish & Chips from the Chip Shop. Bit gutted as worried about the calories.

Does anyone know what food you can get at a fish and chip shop that are low in calories and semi-healthy compared to fried chips and battered fish?

Any help would be great :)

You could ask for the fish lightly battered as most of the calories come from the batter and frying. Maybe instead of a portion of chips you could pinch a few from someone else?

Also if I have really wanted fish and chips I have actually asked for a kids meal with the little mini fish and just a small portion of chips. It's hard to guess the calories but will be lesser than full portion.

Have to say.... fish and chips is a weakness of mine! With mushy peas and salad cream, yummy!

I live near one of the best fish and chip shops in Northern Ireland! I treat myself about once a month (husband loves them too)

    1. he can order what he likes.
    2. I'll order just a fish (sometimes cod, sometimes they have a sustainable fish of the day)
    3. I get it in gluten-free batter (makes it crisper)
    4. I eat all the fish, maybe half the batter, and a handful of chips.
    5. I watch what I eat the rest of the day - anything from the chippie is really going to send the fat intake sky high, so I make sure the rest of my meals are low fat options.
    6. Get some exercise in.

Have a great time with Dad!

Take the batter off the fish (don't have it fried without batter as you get more oil that way) and only have a few chips. I imagine mushy peas if you like them are pretty good (I hate the things!).

Heck, I include tempora shrimp once or twice a month in my food plan and if a client chose a restauarnt with fish and chips as the main attraction I would order the fish, ignore the fries/chips and just eat low fat for my other meals.

Eat some other food on your plan before you go, it's your Dad's birthday, let him enjoy his meal and celebrate! If you order dessert just share one!

I love getting fish and 2 portions of mushy peas. If you leave half the batter from the fish then its pretty low cal. I have it every so often when I cant be bothered to cook since I live opposite an amazing chippy!!

I pretty much do what most of you suggested when I do have fish and chips I only eat half the batter as it gives me a stomach ache if I eat too much.

I did a bit of research and found that I could order fish cake and chips it is 47 calories less. If the chip shop does scallops I may have them, as they are under 300 calories :)

Thank you for the kind help :)

Just pull the breading off and eat the fish. That's what I do.

    Just eat less?
  • Have a small portion of fish & chips and *enjoy them* guilt free with you Dad. Believe me a day will come when your Dad isn't around anymore and you'll wish you sat down with your Dad and enjoyed the moment rather then worrying about the calories

Since I don't live over there I don't know what all is available at a fish and chip shop, but my first thought is if the option of non-battered fried fish is an option go that direction with just a few chips or a healthier side. Friday night fish frys are very popular here but they usually offer a healthier option too.

In the end we didnt have fish and chips. My dad was poorly with a cold and I was a bit icky from a night on the tiles lol.. were a right pair! Ended up having a nice homecooked roast though, unsure it was healthier but at least I got my veggies lol

Glad to hear. In australia we can go for the option of grilled fish and salad. I hacent had battered for years. Roast veg minus the potatoes r ow in calories. I do pumpkin sweet potato eggplant mushroom and garlic with rosemary. Doesnt need salt.
  • Just have it. A treat for a special occasions ain't gunna hurt u. U can't Ho in forever being so uptight abour what u eat, everyone eatsout once in a while!
  • .....a night in the tiles should be more of a concern calorie wise than a fish dinner!

Above is the nutrition facts for my homemade fish and chips - 175 calories per serving!!!!

    Preheat oven to 425
Dip cod fillets into egg and then into bread crumbs
    Place on cooking sheet
Slice sweet potato into fries, toss in a little salt, pepper, and EVOO
    toss on cooking sheet
    bake for 20 minutes

Super fast and easy! You can totally use a normal white potato too, just adjust for the change
  • Next time ask for grilled fish instead of fried, and get a salad instead of chips. Simple.
