I live in Edinburgh, and I have spent every hogmanay there since I came to uni. What do you want to know?

    Yay!

Well we're not really interested in the concerts and don't really want to pay for them anyway. What else can we do? We want to see fireworks and I like the look of the torchlight procession. I assume the city will be packed. Is it a case of everyone hanging out in the streets, or is everyone inside the bits you have to pay for?

Well there are large concerts in Princes Street and in the gardens. Although there tend to be a lot of people on the mile and George IV bridge and the South Bridges, you don't need to pay to get on to these places. YOu can see the fireworks pretty much anywhere in the centre as they are coming from the castle. Last year we watched them from the meadows! As for things to do, absolutely anything. There are pubs clubs and venues open until 5 in some cases

What about the procession? How does that work?

Well you can watch it for free, or pay £6 and get a torch! It starts at the national museum on george IV and then it goes over North Bridge and through waterloo place up to Calton Hill near St Andrews House. I can't quite remember the date though. I'm sure it can be found on the internet somewhere.

I am bringing my family to Edinburgh TOMORROW for vacation! We're very excited about it, we have been planning this trip for some time. Any local secrets you have to share?

I'm a runner, also--I want to run around Holyrood Park in the mornings, is that a workable plan do you think?

Think it's on NY Eve but starts at about 6.30. Any idea how long it would take to get to the end? We're kind of planning on doing the procession then going somewhere for a meal and then back out for the fireworks.

Off the top off my head it ends at half 7 so it should be doable. Although the restaurants are heaving on hogmanay as you can imagine! As for local secrets, I have obviously picked up a lot, so depends what you like doing!

I go running around arthur's seat. Which has got some fantastic scenery and it is 5 minutes away from the mile. If you are on endomondo or anything like that you can see my routes. A lap round arthur's seat takes about half an hour to 40 minutes. But it is parky in the morning...

Hey, thanks for your help. I have a friend who lives in the city so he can book a restaurant for us. But he only moved there from Australia earlier this year so this is his first Hogmanay as well as ours, hence my rather vague questions. We're old and boring so think it will probably be just the procession and food then fireworks for us.

But I may come back to you if I think of anything else!

Thanks, that sounds like exactly the type of route I was hoping for!
I am on Endo, I'll have to look you up and check out your routes. We'll be in country 8 days, so I should get good opportunity to explore!
