Anyone got any suggestions for a programme I could use to support my running, to help develop/tone mmuscle. Preferably just using dumbells. I do have heavy ones though.

concentrate on core exercises as this is a weak area for runners. Search youtube for core exercises to see how they are performed.
I use a heavy medicine ball, performing swings, circles, lunges etc. And lots of plank exercises.

Squats and lunges. If you go to the Runner's World website there are links to some good exercises there to support your running. HTH.

Well since running involves your legs, core and arms... there isn't a weight program that doesn't use those muscles.

Like everyone else said, squats, lunges and core work are going to help.. plus some upper body work.

Thats what I do, and my running is much better because of it.

BTW- Running is not strength training if thats what you are thinking... You still need to work those muscles using weights even if you run.

When I go the the gym, I am only working upper body. Bench press, flies and dumbbell press, rowing, lat pulldown, "skull crushers", deltoids, bicep curls...primarily upper body. My Dr had me basically stop squats, lunges and all that or stop running due to my bad knees. I had to make a choice. I chose running and upper body weight room stuff. Seems to be a happy medium after all this time
