Hypothyroidism..and getting started, again.

I joined this site a while back and haven't been on for some time for obvious reasons. Haven't been eating properly. I tend to eat healthier food but just way too much of it.

Last week I got a TSH number of 6.79. I am quite concerned about that, and am hoping to see a specialist. It's not the entire reason my weight is so high but it ain't helping that is for sure.

I have at the very least identified eating patterns, including late night eating. I also have the added incentive of the first stage of NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis aka fatty liver disease) to get me to eat less. I am starting yet again today and hope that I stay on track this time as I kind of HAVE to.

I hope to get this thyroid issue under control. I am supposed to start levothyroxine today prescribed by my GP but the real treatment will start when I see the endocrinologist. The thyroid issue EXPLAINS alot. I have always been a person plagued by anxiety but it's been worse in the last few years.

I WANT TO GET BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am weaning myself off of benzodiapines for anxiety (Klonopin). I hope the Synthroid/levothyroxine helps. I hate having to take pills but with the thyroid meds there ain't no choice.

I hope to garner support from this community and use this forum as a tool to do that.

Any advice, insight, friendships, and information anyone can add will be appreciated. THANKS.

  • Hypothyrodism...........It may take a while for the GP to get your med adjusted. I know prior to my diagnosis, I was walking it seems like I was always walking... I cut down my calories to 1500 a day……The scales wouldn’t budge, not at all. When I found out my thyroid was defunct…………Of course I was put on meds, nothing changed….Then as they were able to get my numbers stabilized (I stopped losing so much of my hair as well) I noticed that my weight loss was becoming more proficient…………It states that I lost ten pounds, but it’s more than this.
My anxiety hasn’t decreased, but, I am no longer having to take naps either, I’m no longer exhausted constantly.

    Cheers;-))))

Hypothyroidism is tricky. My numbers were close to yours when I first got tested. They had me on a couple different doses of Synthroid before I got the right one. I had to drop my calories pretty low to lose 2lbs per week, so you may have to play around with yours. I joined this site a year ago, but didn't start logging until July. I have lost 37lbs since then, so it IS possible to lose with hypothyroidism. Good luck and add me if you'd like!

I'm a thyroid girl too. I gained 30 pounds last year. This summer, in my depression and compounding TSH rise, I had skipped taking a number of my dessicated thyroid pills over several months [I highly recommend dessicated thyroid over synthetic substitutes] and the cumulative effect had my TSH sky-rocketing to 8.1. Oops. In September, I got serious, started taking my pills regularly and began a plant-based, nutrient-dense diet a la Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Oz and Dr. Robert O. Young. Green smoothies and the like. 70-80% raw.

I've lost 32.4 pounds in 11 weeks. That's an average of 2.95 pounds a week. As you probably know that's simply Miraculous for a thyroid girl.

If you would like to check out a plant-based diet, please visit my blog: www.hollycat50.wordpress.com and click on the Links for resources.

You may think I'm crazy, but the numbers speak for themselves.

As always, your body, your science experiment, your choice.

I was diagnosed in March when my TSH was 6.66. Some don't think that's bad, but I felt like the walking dead. I actually thought it was Lupus and was shocked to find out it was my thyroid. I had already lost 45 pounds before my diagnosis and have continued to lose well since. I'm taking levothyroxine, and it will take a while to find the appropriate dosage for you. They have to start out low and build up. I'm currently at 75 mcg of Synthroid and doing fairly well on it. Not perfect, but much better than I was in March.

I do JUDDD (Dr. Johnson's Up Day, Down Day) diet and it works great for me. You just need to find what you can live with long term and follow that plan. It will happen. Thyroid issues don't mean we can't lose weight, only that we may need to work a little harder at it.
  • It's so hard to lose weight at all let alone to have this as just another hurdle. :( It takes months, I know, to get on the right dose of Synthroid/levothyroxine. Tonight I am so tired. I wanted to use my elliptical but I guess I should have done that earlier today. I have been busy today and am almost sapped of energy. i think that is the worst part--not having the energy to do what I want to do.
