Quit Smoking Tips

I can control my portions, calories, etc. I exercise everyday and I'm very healthy...but I'm a smoker.
Like I said I exercise but I could do so much better if I quit smoking.
I can go several hours without smoking but I have trouble with breaking the habit (like when I'm in the car is a great example).
Any tips to quit smoking?

I just recently quit smoking and I found an Ecig which is just a vapur, helpful during the habitual cigarettes and when I am craving I channel it through excercise. 1 craving equals 10 squats for an example. I also found the book Allan Carr easy way to quit smoking quite helpful it really is just mind over matter. I went to the doctors and they perscribes me Champix but I thought I'd try quitting cold turkey and so far so good. Cravings resemble hunger pangs which is why people usually gain weight when smoking and cravings usually only last about 3 minutes.
You can do this. Think about the health benefits that come along with this.0 -
I quit smoking over the summer after a two decade love affair with cigs. I second an Ecig- it helped get me through the first few weeks. I smoked the 0 nicotine juice just so I could have the habitual part of smoking and cut out the bad stuff. However- about a month in- I gave the Ecig to a friend who was interested in quitting and just started calling myself a non smoker. The withdrawals aren't fun those first few days- but once you can get past that, it's all mental.
Smoking was my favorite thing to do- I kid you not. Now you couldn't PAY me to smoke! Like I said- all mental. Don't allow yourself to think you will fail. Tell yourself you are done with it and MOVE ON. You can do it- promise!!0 -
I quit 15 years ago (after smoking for 20 years) using the patch. I set a date, brought a huge bag of Dumdum suckers and used the patches for about 3 months. I've not smoked one cigarette since I quit. It the best thing I've ever done. One you're really ready to quit, you'll do it and it will be easier than you thought. Just keep trying, you'll do ti!0

That book by Allen Carr worked miracles for me!! Couldn't believe I did it. the thing I hated most about myself. more than being over weight!!0

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. I know I should quit, because it's a deadly addiction, but I love to smoke so much. I am going to be training to run a half marathon soon and I know I would do so much better if I quit smoking. How can i convince myself to want to quit? That's my problem, I don't want to quit. I just know I should.0

I work for a cardiologist. Seeing young//old people come in with heart issues caused by smoking was enough for me. People never think it could happen to them but it can. Life is worth living. I told my self I liked smoking too but the truth is how does one really like breathing in harmful chemicals, smelling horrible, and the bad taste. I'm sure you just like the social aspect of it rather then the action itself. Try reading the Allen Carr book it was great and try an E-cig, they were great for the car and social situations. Hope you find it in yourself to quit. You look young, you can repair most of the damage in your lungs by quitting now before its too late.
Best of luck.

I quit with The Allen Carr method also! I was over a pack a day for 13 years but my partner and i BOTH quit cold turkey using his method (we read the book but there is also clinics all over the world where you can attend a 6 hour seminar and it is 100% guaranteed or they refund your money...I think they have a webinar too) and now we are over 2 months since our last cigarette! . It really wasn't that hard and I totally know that it sounds too good to be true. That what I thought also, but just look at the reviews on amazon for the Allen Carr Easy Way to quit smoking book. Good Luck!0

I have been smoke free now for one year, 7 months. The habit was the hardest ever for me to break! Every time I got in the vehicle I wanted a smoke, breaks..I craved them. You just have to not ever smoke then, break the habit, and eventually you will make it! The vehicle was the hardest for me! I had lots of sugar free gum and water. Mints are great too! I'd keep them where the temptations are! You can do this and your going to love it when you realize what you accomplished! Good luck!0 -

I just celebrated 3 year quit on the 16th.. Before I quit I joined a free website called.. becomeanex.org I made friends and really educated myself. I began to " practice quit" purposely leaving cigs at home while I went somewhere.. Waiting 1 hour after I ate.. waiting until after my coffee before I smoked.. etc.. Making a conscience effort to be a non smoker.. NOT because I had to... but... because I wanted to.. In 6 months I was ready.. I was a 40 year 1 1/2 pack a day smoker.. Now I have to discipline myself to eat healthy and exercise..This has been harder for me...0 -
I quit in April 2007 - went cold turkey.
First - you have to really reallly want it. Identify your reasons and keep them in mind (or written down). If you can keep going back to your why it'll strengthen your resolve and increase the chances of you sticking to your guns.
Second - find something to occupy your hands and/or mouth when you have cravings. I was a catering manager at the time and we had a gigantic box of logo'd dinner mints delivered the week before I quit - I ate those and chewed pens incessantly.
Third - tell people what you're doing. They'll be supportive (even the other smokers that aren't quitting) and will hold you accountable. Oh - and they'll be more forgiving for that first week or so when you're short with them (I warned everyone to expect me to be a ***** for a week while I went through withdrawals).
You can do this! Think about all the money you'll save, how much better your running performance will be (and I mean LOADS), and how much better you'll feel!

Another fan of the Alan Carr book, the EasyWay to Quit Smoking.
Nothing magic other than facts. It only costs like $7.00 so it's worth the shot, considering that's how much a day's cigarettes cost now.
I finished the book, lit my last cigarette, put it out after one puff. Haven't had one since. Over a year. I haven't experienced a moment of discomfort, regret, yearning, or anything.
I had previously tried Chantix, Zyban/Wellbutrin, patch, gum, lozenge, cold turkey, rubber band round the wrist, been forced into smoking cessation classes in the military, promised my mom one year I'd quit for christmas, promised my wife I'd quit for the kids . . .
Nothing else worked. Read that stupid book and then slapped my forehead, said "ah", and walked away.0 -
If you have the control to do all of that you can quit the cancer sticks too. I smoked for 25 years and quit cold turkey a year ago. You just do it, make a decision to stop being weak, that's all it is period.0

lose the denial in this statement
if you smoke, you are not "healthy"0 -
Quitting smoking is probably the single most important thing people can do for their health. I quit cold turkey about 20 years ago after watching my mother die from lung cancer.
Even if you temporarily derail your weight loss do it, you can mitigate many of the detrimental effects of carrying a few extra pounds with exercise, you can't do the same with smoking.
Good luck.0 -

^^^All of this! Couldn't have said it better. I also love how scare tactics aren't used at in the book and he tells you to KEEP smoking until you finish reading. I know I'm never going to smoke again.0 -

Ditto! I have been a nonsmoker now for 6 months (and didn't gain a pound, I quit after I lost weight and was maintaining).0 -
As mentioned before, the defining difference is your depth of desire to quit. I quit on 4/2/12 after 48 years and smoked up to 2 packs per day the last few years. I used the patch and a prescription from my doc for Zyban/Wellbutrin to lessen craving and anxiety.
Situational cravings can be difficult to handle like wanting to smoke when your'e on the phone or in your car. Keep a bag of hard candies handy to suck on. Also, when I would get a particularly difficult craving, I would stop and breathly deeply & slowly right down to my core several times until it passed.0 -

That would be true, if it were true. :laugh:0 -
I just quit 11 days ago. I'm happy- I feel like the ball and chain that kept me tied to the gas station and smoke shop has been broken.Because no matter if I lose weight and get fit, being a smoker just doesn't fit into the equation! Good luck to all who just started and congrats to those who have been quit for a while- it's a godawful habit to break!0
