I just completed my first 5k yesterday and am registered for another on December 9. I'd love to love running - it's still not my favorite; however, I'm going to keep going and maybe do a half in 2013. :)

Such an amazing story! You overcame a spinal cord injury AND lost over 100 lbs!!!. YOU are an amazing woman. I am a runner. I am in love with running. I run 6-7 miles a day 5x a week, but I have never had such an injury as yours. Congrats to you! I hope you are super proud of the strength that you found within you :)))

I would love to have 'running' friends. I use to run alot...several 5k's, 4 triathlons, and a half marathon under my belt...but over the last 5 years, I've let myself go...and running is HARD!

I just started the Couch to 5k program on Sunday.....

Would love to support and be supportive!!

  • I have the worst build for running. I am very slow (I run 10km/hr on a treadmil but I think I race at 9 km/hr) I have short stumpy legs and flat feet. I get really tight calves and have issues with my ham strings. I have however managed to run a half marathon, two 10kms and a triathlon this year. I don't particularly like the physical feeling of running but I love the feeling after you finish - the feeling of pushing yourself to your limits and meeting your goal. I also think its the ultimate form of fitness.

I havn't gone for a run in about 3 months but I want to get back into it. I have just signed up to a 12km run next year in february.

Feel free to add me as well. I'm hoping to be back into shape to be able to run a proper 5K. I have no excuse, just been inactive for too long and now I'm feeling it!
I'm at a fast pace walk/jog and can go 3-5 mile. Right now I last about a minute running. One day....one day.
  • I did the c25k plan and managed the 5k but then stopped for a few weeks for various reasons, now I'm back at week 6, I think I'll be back up to running three lots of ten minutes soon though, and then half an hour by Christmas hopefully. I'm going to find a 5k to train for in the new year.

It's amazing how steep the decline in fitness is, I thought it wouldn't be too bad, but I felt like I was back to square one when I got back out there.

I'm really quite slow, but then I have 81lbs to lose and I'm asthmatic and never done running before, so I think I'm doing ok. I can sprint in short bursts, and it's good to see what I could be like in the future, I'll kick butt when I'm on top form! Although I think I'm built for endurance rather than speed.

I've been running for almost 3 years now, mostly 1/2 marathon distances and a couple fulls. Starting to dabble in the shorter distances a little, but mostly just have fun and run! Add me if you'd like:)
  • I'd love to be able to run in the future, even jogging and I'd be happy!
I want to start something like the C25K program but I'm going to wait till I've had physio for my back and knee then see what they say. Until then, I'll be walking everywhere, maybe a bit of power walking if I'm having a good day!

Feel free to add me fellow runners :)

Running for around three years now but I always pick it up and drop it, usually in the winter I don't run and it's only this year I started entering races.

Just getting back into it again now after a few months off and trying to convince myself to get out there in that horrible UK rain, wind and cold!!

I just learned to run this summer, ran my first 5 k in Sept, signed up for the Resolution 5k. Running a 5 k was one of those fitness goal I had. Done. Don't plan to stop now!

Feel free to add me too, I would love to have more running friends!

Started c25k around July last year when I was at my heaviest. Ran a 5k in Nov, 10k in Dec and a Half Marathon in Feb and am now at my goal weight. I am training hard for some PB's this season, have already ran the 5k so I have the 10k and the half to go!

I started running in April this year and I love it.
I now run 4 days a week a short run first thing in a morning then another longer run on an evening.
I'm completely addicted and won't miss a run if i can help it.
I am open to any friend requests as it would be nice to see how other runners are doing on MFP.

Feel free to add me. Well done on your story - amazing!!

I was going home form work in August, when I realised I'd run out of cigs. I decided not to buy more, put on some joggers and decided to go for a run. For the first time in my life. I ran about 3 mins. Walked for 5. Ran for 2. And so on. I was RUBBISH! But each day I got a bit better. Then I join a gym.
Why did no one warn me that treadmills are harder? I had to start all over again when I joined on the 1st September.

Last thursday and friday I ran 5k each day. For the first time.

So proud of myself. Never thought I would do a full 5k. Ok - to some it's not much. But it was 34 mins continuous running, whereas the first step on a treadmill I couldn't do 5!!!!!

    Very addictive

I would like to just take off and run... but I have injuries from an old motorcycle accident and have had a couple back and hip surgeries. After coming off a surgery and losing a significant amount of weight last year, I was hoping to go from walking (18 months ago I was using a cane) to running a 5k this year, hasn't worked out so well. I have made progress though. I can do some interval jogging during a 3-4 mile walk.
  • I'm running my first 5K since high school in two weeks! Started running again this past summer usually 3 days a week. I'm pumped to run in a race again! I used to run cross country in high school but that was over 10 years ago!

    Inspiring story Joyzy!

I am scheduled to run my first 5K on January 1st. I figure it is a good way to start off the year. As a ex-Us army Infantry sgt, I had my fill of running when I served (1985 - 1989). I literally haven't done any running since then. Over the last year or so, I have been doing a lot of hiking and now just started to do some running and it feels so good. I have to take it slow, as I am about 35 lbs overweight and I really don't want to injure myself. I have a 1.25 mile loop in my neighborhood with a couple of good hills that I have yet to get through yet, so it's baby steps. I can't believe how out of shape I am!

Anyway, thank you all for your stories and if anyone would like to add me, please feel free.

    Thanks,
    Keith
  • Hi there, I gotta say your story is inspiring!

I regulary run 5ks and have recently moved into 10k territory hoping to progress to a half marathon. I love running and try to fit it in whenever I can.

I would love to hear from you or other runners of any ability.

I ran my first race in July it was a 10k that I ran because you got to run through the giant inflatable patriots helmet and finish at the 50 yard line in Gilette stadium. It was the only time I could do that and not get tackled by security and escorted from the premises

That day I wasn't ready for a race that long so it was a mixture of run/walk (and it was 86 degrees out)

Since then I've run at least a race a month and the warrior dash (with a 5K the NEXT day).

When I got myself proper running shoes I overtrained, a LOT and gave myself planar faciatias. I'm 95% better now and I've been running my races and maybe 1 day a week otherwise. I have a race thursday, 2 in December about 2 weeks apart and then a 5k AND a one mile race on New Years day and then probably one on Superbowl sunday.

I've been trying to stick to exercises that don't kill my feet until I'm completely better but my goal next year is a 1/2 marathon, probably in November so I'll have to ramp up training about June or so...

I've also signed up for two different running series and that is because you cannot sign up for the third.

My story isn't as awesome but I'm a runner

I was dx asthmatic as a child, complicated by severe allergies. I had pneumonia and bronchitis every year, when I was in 2nd grade I was taken to the dr with a fever 106.7 yes 106.7 like brain damage high with severe dehydration I was given an antibiotic that killed me taken to the or for exploratory surgery. My left lung was 3/4 filled with fluid, I was dying.
    I recovered

As an adult I have 1.5 functioning lungs with scar tissue in the other half. I run 4-5 days a week (25 ish miles a week) with my lungs and a docs told me to never try to run.

    Heh.

It's hit me I've been running. . pretty much for six years now. I've had a few 4 to 6 week hiatuses, but I always get back to it.

What I've discovered is this is a very goal oriented activity. Goals = Motivation. Always have a goal, e.g. race scheduled.

i never dreamed i would be running as my form of exercise or stress relief nor did i EVER think i would compete in any races. i've done 2 5k mud runs, 1 5k color run, an 8k, a 10k, getting ready to run a 5k turkey trot, then a sleighbell 5k and in june i'll run my very first half marathon!!!! already training for the half. i'm sure between january and june i'll add a few more races.
  • I loved your story that is amazing!!! I was an avid runner before both of my girls. Just had my last one in August and just started getting back into running again finally!!!! Feel free to add me!
  • I'm an aspiring runner. I will start the C25k plan this Saturday to get ready for my first 5k in Feb ( the color run!). I hope I end up loving it too!

I'll call myself a runner too! I started a couple years ago but took a year and a bit off to be pregnant and have my twin boys. :-). Restarted a couple months ago and I'm getting ready to run a 5k in Dec. I'm working up to another 10k and then possibly train for a half marathon next year! I'm hoping the running gets easier as the weight drops off. ;-).
Feel free to add me... Would love the motivation! :-)

Inspiring story! I always love having runner friends! I just finished my first half on Sunday and plan on completing a full by spring 2014. Feel free to add me!
  • Picked up running in July as a means to burn calories outside the gym. I'll be running my first races on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day (5 miler and 5K) but I'm already dreaming of tackling much longer distances in 2013. I'm always looking for more running pals. Send me a friend request and I'll accept.
