I have never done much exercise and have come to recognize that this is a big factor in my weight gain and general bad health. The problem is I have no idea where to start! I'm really out of shape so I would definitely categorize myself as a beginner. Does anyone have any tips or good workout DVDs etc that could help me?

Starting to walk for a hour every day is a good start. With time walk faster and faster until you train yourself up so you can slowly jog and then run. Walking is great for starters, gonna build your cardio endurance and burn some good calories as well. I would say just start with it. If you can do jogging or running instead, if you are in decent enough shape. Later when you progress look for programs and stuff, if you want.

i started out by running as long as i could (less then four minutes) then walking till i could run again for a total of about half an hour. after two weeks i could jog for 30 mins. the couch to 5k program is supposed to be good also. when i was a bit fitter i started doing the 30 day dhred, off youtube, and when i felt like i wouldn't make a complete tit of myself i went to the gym and got a program devised by a trainer. baby steps. you'll be amazed at how quickly you adapt.
  • try the one mile walk with Leslie Sanson it's a great work out and you burn lots of calories

Log your foods....if calories out are more than calories in you can lose weight. Start by walking, jogging or whatever feels good to you. If that means playing Wii boxing, tennis or one of the dance games...do it. If you can lift weights and want to tone muscle light weights many reps...does not matter what you do as long as you do something!
  • Walking is a great way to start. But the most important thing I can think of is to start out with small reasonable goals and expectations. If you start out with too large of goals i.e. trying to walk for an hour to start you might get discouraged. Set a small goal and as you acheive them, add to them. Walk 15 mins, then walk 30 mins, then walk 45 etc. I think another member posted to add running in. Yes, but at a little at a time and you WILL get there! Good luck, small changes add to big losses!

whats your goal , physical strength or heart/cardio strength?
  • Thanks for the advice! My main goal is just to be physically fit, able to handle cardio type exercise. So I guess cardio strength?
