Hi everyone. I'm new around here, just getting going. I have a long weight-loss road ahead of me, so looking forward to some good conversations. I want to lose 100 lbs, and figure that will take me about two years. Well, one step at a time.

My short-term goal: drop one waist size so I can wear some of the pants I have in the closet and avoid going shopping.

My longer-term goal: I'm heading to Europe in 5 months (end of April), and want to be able to sit comfortably during a trans-Atlantic flight.

Nice to meet you all!

welcome... if you dont mind a suggestion; i would suggest your make shorter term goals not just your end goal. just saying you want to lose xxx lbs usually leads to failure and a lot of starting and stopping a "diet"

Hi. Here' s some ideas...... Set a goal for the first 10 pounds..... shorter term goal is easier to see in the near distance.
Start walking....... short term ....... 10 minutes...... and walk back... Try a walking dvd at home in front of the tv...... Do the fast action dvd in slow motion... don't worry . We won't laugh.
Do a lot of stretching exercises.... warm up muscles ......
Log all of your food....... walk.... stretch....... do some housework that burns calories..... and start dancing!!
This can be done...... And then when you lose the first 10.... set the goal for the next 10 or 20.... You can do this!!!

Wow, you guys are awesome! Already a whole mess of advice and friend requests! Thanks!

Yes, short term goals are great. I really try not to look much beyond the next five pounds or it's too depressing. Seriously, all I'm concentrating on now is that in about 10 lbs, I should be able to wear a bunch of clothes hanging in my closet, and avoid having to go buy new fat-man clothes.

Does anyone have advice on the following? When I try to lose weight, I tend to go all out and lose rapidly. This is great, but I can't stick with it, and eventually start gaining again. This time, as with every time, I'm hoping to go more gradually - aiming for 1 lb / week. I find this really hard to achieve though without obsessive calorie counting. Has anyone made that really gradual, steady-as-you-go approach work?
