Calories for bareback riding?

So if I look up horseback riding I find all sorts of different calorie charts. I can't say I trust any of them, due to having enough experience to know there is a huge amount of difference in how much physical output you require for all different types of riding, walking, trotting, cantering, galloping, English vs. Western, rodeo, trail riding and so on.

My question is, does anyone know how many calories riding bareback burns? I can't seem to find that anywhere, and I definitely think bareback uses far more muscles and gets the heart racing faster then any other kind of riding.

Any answers?

I honestly base my horseback riding calorie burn based on what speed I've spent the most time at, or log it as "general." I'm a hunt seat rider on my university equestrian team, so I do a fair bit of posting and holding 2-point. For me, it all depends on speed. I make sure I do plenty of other exercise on my riding days as well, though.

    This thread doesn't deliver.

And I know nothing about horseriding.

Hmmm all I can suggest is getting a heart rate monitor / calorie counter and working it out yourself for a close count?!

I spend a good deal of my weekend at a ranch, so there's not much time for other exercise, plus I'm pretty tired after being outdoors and working all day.

I found an online chart and my riding included grooming, so I averaged the two. I felt great and the calories burned helped my weight to drop. I'm not going to be able to ride again for several months, but I'll start again in the spring. The monitors they're talking about will work out if you're the sort of person who appreciates specific information. I didn't feel as though it was necessary for me. I was just happy riding, and happy with the results-except for the bursitis from too much posting. I ended up riding with my feet out of the stirrups most of each lesson. I'm still dealing with the bursitis and sore knees were part of the reason I decided to lose weight in the first place.

I have a bodymedia, have for like 2 years. Till it integrated with MFP I wasn't watching it well enough, wasn't syncing it daily.

I ride english. Dressage based, with my first jumping lessons this summer. (Later in life rider). We hack, go camp in the forest as well.

A lot of the calorie burn charts I've seen for when I used to input my exercise here didn't really align with my BMF. But I couldn't give you a burn rate to use of of it. Often walking seemed to be higher than needed, and trotting less of a workout than it can be. Canter was hit and miss..

I hate charts trying to find a standard burn rate ;)

Adding bareback to the mix.. I have a friend who learned bareback as a kid with a pony. Her seat is good enough that bareback doesn't really change the effort for her. For me.. it would seriously upend by balance enough to change my work out.

when I ride with a saddle I mostly ride western, so there is a certain amount of difference by how much energy I expend bareback. Still, I find the calorie estimates to be very high. I don't think when I ride for 3 hours I've burned more than 600 calories! I thought about using gadgets as suggested, but as it's winter here, I'm not sure how it would be of any use (or accurate) under the 7 layers of clothing I have on!
