Check out stronglifts and starting strength. They will get you far. Remember the big lifts are the most impact. Deadlift, bench press, squat, rows, Pullups(I know pullups aren't for right now).

  • I recommend that you start out working with a trainer until you are able to educate yourself as to how to train. Videos will not suffice, you don't want to injure yourself. Best of luck!
  • thx targetcc but i cant afford a trainer right now or else that would be of been my first thought.

The staff at the fitness center I'm with has put me on a great circuit...3x each week. Great for beginners. Do this rotation 3 times, each exercise for 30 seconds, along with opening and closing stretching exercises:

    Planks
    StepUps
    Standing Lunge Rows
    Pushups
    Squats
    Armband Pulls
    Deadlifts
    Lateral Box Runs

It may seem like a lot, but it's very tolerable.

Watch youtube videos of each of the major lifts, then go to the gym. Ask someone, either the person at the desk or one of the people that you always see in the weight room if they will watch you for a couple of minutes to make sure you are doing it right. Most people are very nice about it and it doesn't take too long especially if you mostly know what you are doing...

Weight lifting will really help you look the way you want. It will maintain or increase your muscle mass and make you lose nearly all fat instead of cardio which will make you lose both. I've also heard that it will help your skin taut as you lose. Make sure you take pictures from the front and side as well as take measurements before you start lifting, because it can really throw off the number on the scale for a while.

Make sure you watch their video for the lifts as well. Form is so important so you don't hurt yourself!

my advice is to stick with the basics and forget you ego for the first 6 weeks when it comes to the weight you're using. Focus on perfect form with each lift (to prevent injuries anddevelop good growth habits) and just be consistent. You'll get tons of advice from anyone you ask... some good, and some will hurt you bad if you take it, but if you just start with some basic lifts, focus on form, and take your time you'll build a good base and start seeing some results.

And above all else... just get to the gym. consistency and habit will beat out anything else. don't get frustrated, just get your butt to the gym and go slow (to start).

There are some programs on bodybuilding.com.

I'm about to start week 3 of a program by Jamie Eason, starts with clean eating and muscle endurance, then moves on to heavier lifts. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jamie-easons-livefit-introduction.html

I really like it so far, and with everything laid out day by day it is easy to follow.

    Good luck!

Here's a great beginner's routine which is simple and uses basic, compound movements:

  • Exercises using weights with the purpose to supplement any other exercise you do, whether it be martial arts, swimming, running, yoga, golf, gymnastics etc. Your goals should be to boost your performance in your chosen field, not to lift the heaviest weights possible, and not to develop muscles that slow you down, reduce flexibility etc
