calves cramping

I have been having a problem with my calves cramping -- a whole lot.
Mostly on my right leg actually walking didn't seem to bother the left leg at all.
Just walking slowly for example one side starts cramping up and causing me to limp half way through the first lap.
I don't jog - I know I would probably trip and fall with the cramp it is that severe.
I did see a doctor who just 'guessed' I must have pulled it so told me to rest and stop walking until it healed.
So the rains kicked in and I did stop for a couple of months.
Now I have started the Zumba and I have the same cramping on the same leg. So it didnt' heal I guess
I had to stop early in my class as I was afraid I was going to fall on my face due to the cramping or strain.
Is this normal? had this happen to you? Any suggestions?
I can't spend my life waiting for this thing to heal and progress any ;-\

How much water do you drink per day? Do you increase that amount with each workout? And do you replace your electrolytes post-workout?
Also, when I was new to exercise (or when I change my exercise habits) I tend to get leg cramps. Also, some BCP (Yaz and the like) can alter your electrolyte imbalance and cause cramping.
Maybe it's not an injury, but a hydration/electrolyte issue?0
