Staying within your macros means that you are eating the proper percentages of carbs, protein, and fat. For example, on a 1,000 calorie diet where you are trying for 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat, you would try to get 400 calories from carbs, 300 calories from protein, and 300 calories from fat. Keep in mind that, while carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram, fat has 9 calories per gram (so you will eat fewer grams of fat).
