How to calculate weightlifting calorie burn?

Anyone know of a way to guestimate this, or are there any good products out there than can track this through like pulse or something, that bodybug thing or something similar? I have no idea I've never looked into those things.

Thanks!

Casey

i use bodymedia its an armband you wear around your arm that keeps track of how many calories you during any activity
theres also a lot of other calorie trackers out there you can buy to wear. It's been working out very nice for me the past 8 weeks i've noticed a lot of changes, fat loss around the body.

the other stuff will be rough estimates based on their formulas just like the TDEE calculators these bands are way more accurate and you can just create your caloric deficit or caloric surplus based on the bands results.

I have used a polar fitness watch with chest strap when weightlifting a lot. It all really comes down to how much your heart rate gets up during the lifts. But typical workouts of 55 mins with a killer pace (less than min rest between sets) I can usually do about 300 calls burned. So maybe use 125 every 30 mins as a gauge. Keep in mind that strength training has way more impact than just the calories burned during the session and tends to do more for your metabolism. So don't let the low calorie burn fool you....the benefits are much greater than that for sure. Good luck

put in my order for the LINK one from bodymedia or whatever it is.. will be nice to have the iphone app when I'm doing cardio or working out at the gym, but it will suck when I'm doing outdoor training or some situation where I can't or don't want to take my phone and a watch would be more convenient. apparently the watch is not compatible with the link.

Heart rate monitors are pretty useless for calculating the calories that you burn during weightlifting. They can give you an "ok" indication for "cardio" but that's it.

I wish the link had the option for the link too. Not sure whether that or the new smaller core is more practical.

Yeah, HRM's aren't really accurate for calories burned during weight lifting. I mean not that you don't burn calories during that, just that there isn't really an accurate, reliable way to measure them do to varying heart rates. During cardio you tend to be "in the zone" and your heart rate remains elevated so it's different... honestly I don't count my calories for lifting. It's about toning, not calories. But after a heavy lifting session I always drink a nice big protein loaded shake. Strength training is great to do before running/cardio I don't exactly know the science behind it but I tend to get WAY better burns during my run after lifting
