Red in the Protein

Is it bad to show red for protein? Yesterday I was -17 for protein.

No, consider the goal a "minimum". The protein goals here are set really low. You can eat much more than this site suggests.

No. MFP's default protein goal is low... only 15% of your daily calories. It should be considered a minimum to pass, not a maximum to stay under.

I would honestly recommend changing your settings to at least 30% for protein. Help maintain muscle while you are losing. Consider high in protein a good thing.

You can tweak the way the goals are set - I set my protein goals higher - generally around 25-30% because I find that I will eat better food (lean meat, yogurt, beans, etc) if I push myself to eat more protein.

If you are still set on MFP's default macros, you should change them. 15% protein is too low. I have mine set at 35,35,30, but other people do 40, 30, 30 , or whatever you like for yourself. People should be getting about .8g protein per pound of lean body mass (if you dont know that, then around .8g for every kg of your weight). In my opinion, more than that isnt a bad thing either, unless you have kidney problems.

Edit to change the grams per pound/kg. The one I first put was incorrect.

How do you change those settings? I would love to do that.

Notice: The consumption of raw or undercooked eggs, meat, poultry, seafood or shellfish may increase your risk of food borne illness.

    NM just found it.
  • I agree with everyone that has posted to this point ... consensus is that the default is too low a percentage for protein!

Only if it made your go over your Calorie goal for that day OR your doctor says you can only have so many grams of protein because of a medical issue.

Thanks everybody. I was really starting to worry. Anything in red freaks me out. I'll change my settings now.

Easy tiger I'm just saying its not as easy to aim for the red in the protein when you have to eat 240+grams ed as it would be for a 110lb guy to eat 110g of protein was all.
