I'd buy a whole chicken as apposed to just the bag of breasts. A whole chicken is just around $5 and you can make several meals with the meat. I like to season one, throw it in the slow cooker on high for 4 hours then harvest all the meat from it. Then I throw the bones back in all the juices in the slow cooker, add about 6-8 cups of water then let it continue on low for 8 hrs. You now have the best homemade chicken broth. I strain that and freeze the stock in a muffin pan so I have frozen portions of stock ready to go.
Thanks for this tip! It's always the most obvious that I overlook.

This may not be practical for you, but I meal plan, so I use up what we have and nothing goes to waste. Sundays I try and go through and plan for the week. Maybe that way you could go shopping once a week so stuff is fresh and you wont loose as much. I hope something I said helped!

I think this is also a key. Plan your week so you can re-use and harvest from the previous day. I also try to do this and it saves lotsa money. When I'm at my budget and health best, I plan and shop on Saturday and cook on Sunday... then work the plan for the rest of the week, using up leftovers each day.

Go to Aldi if you have one and get your fruits and veggies. I got a weeks worth of salad fixings for less than 5 bucks! 5 bucks???!!! Pick one week to stock up on staples-dry goods-rice, pasta, legumes, beans, oatmeal. One week to get your meats- you might want to try an "International" store or your farmer's market-for lower prices. Also, when I need deli meats, I go to BJ's. They have good prices and a decent selection. When I break up my shopping into categories by week, I get more stuff. You may want to buddy up and find someone who has a wholesale store card. Me and a friend used to buy bulk, split the bill and the food. That way you dont spend so much, but your freezer is packed!

I just read that aldis has a 10lb bag of potatoes for $1.98. I cant believe that :noway: but i am so happy about it. Since it is just me im wondering what am i going to do with 10lbs of potatoes??? . I dont want to eat tons of potatoes for a week but maybe 3 times a week until there gone. Can i freeze raw potatoes, or should i dice them up then cook them then freeze? I am already thinking about what i am going to do with the money i will be saving

GREAT idea! We buy whatever is on sale and lots of it. Just about everything freezes, including breads, cheese, most fruits, and veggies. Freezing can change the texture of some veggies, but that can be okay and even desired depending on the recipe. Frozen potatoes work great if you shred them first (for potato pancakes, as a filler to bind ground meat for meat loaf, or to make hash browns). Dice or cube them before freezing to drop into soups. Cut into steak fry shape before freezing - and then you can pull them out and bake them to make healthy fries.

Other ideas for when you have a lot of potatoes on hand: in the crock pot with a roast, in the crock pot with other veggies and a tomato base and lots of curry spices, diced up and with a little olive oil in a saute pan - add some onion, meat, or other veggies for a filling hash. Toss some diced potatoes (even if they are frozen) in some chicken stock and simmer then puree with a hand blender... top with a sprinkle of cheese and you have a yummy soup.

    Good luck!!
