Any natural peanut butter. I need mine to have salt, your mileage may vary. Ingredient: Peanuts, salt. Loaded with healthy fats, some protein. If I can't fit the real deal into my calories, I don't eat it. The real stuff is healthy, it is just calorie dense.

Yeah the calorie content on any nut butter is crazy! Luckily I'm not super addicted to it & eat it by the spoonful like some people. I just literally have less than a tablespoon full on my rice cake in the morning before I hit the gym to give me some energy & fill me up a bit.

Oh and calorie dense does not mean unhealthy. I'm also a HUGE fan of natural cashew butter, tastier than peanut butter, same general benefits..

Trader Joe's store brand! You can get it salted or unsalted. The salted has 2 ingredients: Peanuts and Salt, and the unsalted has 1 ingredient. It's cheaper than the national brands and tastes a heck of a lot better.

I used to get something called Better than Peanut Butter at Trader Joes that was super yummy. Can't wait til they put one of those stores near here.

Regular peanut butter is 95 or 100 calories per tablespoon. You're saving only 15-20 calories, and instead of eating a product made only with peanuts (and perhaps salt), you're eating a product that includes corn syrup solids, hydrogenated oils, and a host of other unpronounceable ingredients.

That tradeoff is certainly not worth 15-20 calories for me. OP asked for a health-friendly option and I don't think that fits the bill.

I eat the real stuff (I'm partial to Trader Joe's varieties) and work the calories into my overall day.

make your own. That way you can put in exactly what you want.

All you need is a food processor and nuts. You can add salt, honey, sugar, chocolate, whatever to taste. I've found with peanuts, they have plenty of their own oil to turn super creamy, almonds are a little dryer and need a touch of oil to get it going. I haven't tried other nuts yet, though I have about 5 pounds of pecans from my backyard that I just need to crack to experiment with.

You can google the process for it, or just do the following.
    Put nuts into food processor
    turn on food processor
    watch it make peanut butter
    enjoy.

It is really that easy. The only time you'll need to deviate from that is maybe to stop it and scrape down the sides or at the end, add whatever you like (tip: good time to add extra nuts for crunchy)

I recently started getting my peanut butter from those grinder things at HEB Central Market. I believe it's just peanuts (or peanuts and dark chocolate, or honey roasted peanuts, lol) depending on the one you get. I don't know how much better it is than any other good natural peanut butter, but it's fun watching it come out of the grinder thing :-)

I had been using the SKippy Natural but I just realized it had added sugar and palm oil. Will be trying the Trader Joe's kind next - love that place!

Any recs for a good peanut butter? I tried the whole PB2 thing & I just don't like it. TIA!

I am confused as to why so many health junkies are recommending these.
I have the White Chocolate Wonderful one, but like the others it is PACKED with sugar, so is my go-to for a treat, not for a healthy and delicious PB snack.

Peanut butter in general is healthy in moderation. It's high in protein. I usually eat 1 TBSP (even though the serving size is 2 TBSP) of reduced fat creamy Jif.

1 TBSP of that is 95 calories
    Ingredients:
PEANUTS, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, SUGAR, SOY PROTEIN, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: SALT, FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OILS (RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN), MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, MOLASSES, MAGNESIUM OXIDE, NIACINAMIDE, FERRIC ORTHOPHOSPHATE, ZINC OXIDE, COPPER SULFATE, FOLIC ACID, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE.

1 TBSP of natural peanut butter (just peanuts & salt, nothing else) is also 95 calories.

Wow, Jif puts all that extra stuff in their PB and can't even get the calorie count down.
