Spinach Burger Binding Agent

When making the below spinach burger recipe, what would you recommend I use as a binding agent (preferably grain-free) in place of the bread crumbs? Sweet potato? Butternut squash?

Ingredients:

1 bag thawed, well-drained, chopped spinach
2 egg whites
1 egg
1/4 c. diced onion
1/2 c. shredded cheese
1/2 c. bread crumbs <--
1 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Add more eggs, as the bread doesn't really bind anything, the eggs do. Actually, I would use whole eggs in your recipe, that's where all of the nutrition is! You also could add flour (regular all purpose or almond flour if you don't do wheat) instead.

    Edited entirely...

The recipe already has eggs, so I doubt more eggs is going to help keep things together. I wouldn't use butternut or sweet potatoes, they're too high in liquids, you want something that is going to soak up the liquid and provide some bulk--this is what the bread crumbs do. If you're trying to avoid just wheat, I'd say gluten-free bread crumbs, or maybe ground up (all corn) tortillas. Another poster said almond meal, which might work. Not sure what else.

...and make sure you drain the spinach thoroughly and perhaps refrigerate for a bit after you form the patties so they hold together better :)

Feta Cheese - my neighbour uses it in homemade burgers - and doesn't use any breadcrumbs.

Maybe chia that's been soaked for a couple minutes? I second the mashed potato flake idea, too, and throw in some grated parmesan. As averse to this concept as I was when I first read the subject line, these do sound like they could be pretty darn good.
