Skiing cross country for a big guy?

I have done cross country skiing off and on for years (and downhill when I was younger), but only traditional classic skiing. My problem is that as a large guy 450+ lbs, I have problem with hills and keeping my speed in check, because braking via snowplowing isn't cutting it. With the inability to slow down I am at risk for crashing, and thus injury. Sadly most of the groomed trails around here have lots of rolling hills flowing through them.

Does anyone have any experience with using skate or backcountry skis as a larger person? Do you find those types of skiing are better and safer for larger people? What are the pros and cons? I am wondering if I might do a bit better with skate skis because I have a history of ice skating, or with backcountry skis because they have an edge and a sidecut for turning.

Till then I am sticking two the one or two flat trails in the area.

Is there a store near you that could offer you some help? I don't know much about skiing but I would think some kind of sporting store may be able to help you figure it out.

I just want to say how amazing it is that you are skiing and keep up the hard work!
