Are people nicer when you lose weight?

I have been working so very hard on my weightloss and am down 65lbs since the summer.

Recently I noticed people have been so much more friendly to me than when I was larger. Granted, I am still pretty big but getting more fit and slimming down. I also think my self-confidence is improved and I make more eye-contact as I am not as embarrassed as I was before.

Maybe it's my imagination but as much as it feels good that people (strangers) are nicer to me, it makes me sad as I am still the nice person I was when I was heavier. :(

I don't know if it's that they're being "nicer" or if it's the "more self confidence" thing or what, but yes, it does seem different.
  • IMO not your imagination. I have noticed the same thing. I think people have an aversion, conscious or unconscious, to the overweight (particularly the obese and morbidly obese). Part of it might be that many obese people don't look as put together as normal weight or athletic individuals. Part of it might be your self confidence.

Yes, they absolutely are. When I was in my early 20's I lost 60 pounds and suddenly people who never gave me the time of day were coming out of the woodwork to be my friend. Guys that pretended I didn't exist were asking me out on dates. Honestly, I resented it.
