Lactose Intolerance?

Not sure if this is the correct place to put this but I'm wondering about other people's experiences with lactose intolerance. I never dealt with it until I had my first child. After that I only had problems when I drank a lot of milk. But I could eat pizza, ice cream, yogurt, etc with no problems. Now lately, it seems even eating a single greek yogurt gets me. I get very bloated and uncomfortable feeling. These symptoms are very different from my past ones if just having gas (I usually have to apologize to the people around me when I drink milk). I haven't been eating anything differently or any WAY differently, but I have noticed that every day when I eat a yogurt, I get this feeling. Anyone else have this experience or something similar?? Thanks!

Yes! I went on the Herbalife plan and was making my shakes with milk. As it turns out, drinking 3+ cups of milk a day is not good for my tummy! I can still have dairy, but not in large amounts. I have mostly cut dairy out of my diet now and my gas and bloating is MUCH less then it was before.

If you love dairy, buy Lactaid pills extra strength. My daughter is severely lactose intolerant and she loves dairy. The pill work great for her. She hasn't had a reaction in years. I remember the last reaction she had and I don't wish that amount of pain on anyone!

Sounds like the creeping effect of adult onset lactose intolerance. I have the same thing. Usually it happens in your twenties where you body become less and less able to digest lactose on its own. It started for me at 23 where I noticed if a drank a lot of milk I'd get bubble guts. I became more sensitive over time. At 28 I now have issues with just 3/4 cottage cheese or greek yogurt and need to take lactase. Small amounts of cheese are still okay, especially aged cheese, but I fully stopped drinking milk awhile ago. I swapped to unsweetened almond milk completely and that works well.

Overall it sucks. Getting use to not being able to eat what you always have is tough. After five years I'm starting to get comfortable with it but it took time.

Good luck, if there are any other questions feel free to message me :)

Yogurts, and particularly Greek yogurt, are a very low source of lactose, and are actually generally okay for lactose intolerant individuals to eat. If you truly think it is that rather than something else in your diet, cut it out for two to three weeks and see if that has any effect. I can't drink straight milk or eat ice cream because I have lactose issues, but yogurt doesn't cause me any problems at all.

I don't usually have problems with regular yogurts because part of the process of making yogurt breaks down the lactose but I've never tried Greek yogurt, can't get past the smell! Lactose is hidden in so many things it's hard sometimes to know just what the culprit was. A lot of processed meats contain lactose as do most baked goods. I'm OK with small quantities but a sausage on a hot dog bun can even be a bad combo.

I actually tried Lactaid about 6 months ago and it made me puke!! I didn't understand it but after some research it seems that's a common effect with people. So I stopped taking it and threw it out. I was really hoping it was the answer to my prayers....:(

Greek yogurt is higher in lactose than others generally. It is just strained of water an additional time compared to regular yogurt concentrating all the other nutrients in it like protein and lactose. A lot of lactose sensitive people are fine with consuming it though. Just depends on your threshold of sensitivity.

I've had the same thing happen too. It had to do with dosage and timing for me. If I take it too early or too much I would get ill. Just another thing I had to get use to with the change. Boo...

I don't know about the yogurts but try lactose free milk, soy milk or almond milk as an alternative.

All I know is that she takes the pill just before she takes a bite or drink of anything with lactose. It doesn't upset her stomach and she is the kind that any meds will easily upset her stomach. Maybe the timing is key.

    Hi.
I'm new to this blog. I have been lactose intolerant just about all of my adult life -- I'm retired now. For me it gradually got worse and worse. By the time I graduated from college, I was severely lactose intolerant. Even 1 ounce of milk would do me in. I went the Lactaid pills route for many years, but as many LI people can tell you, they work, but not 100%. Then early this year, I discovered super enzymes. These are supplements that not only include lactase, but four other enzymes your body needs to help your digestion. These super enzymes have changed my life. i no longer have to worry about ordering from a restaurant menu and requesting dairy substitutions! I told my cousin about the enzymes who is also severely lactose intolerant and they worked for her too.

I'm not trying to sell anyone anything but I got so excited about these supplements, that I wrote a kindle book about them on Amazon. I'm offering the kindle book for free today only (12/2/2012) from Amazon. You will find it at: http://amzn.to/P5ii0g In the book I explain who will most likely benefit from these supplements. For example, if you are LI and not milk-allergic you would benefit. Milk allergy is an immune problem, not a problem with lactase deficiency.

In case you miss the free day, the super enzymes I use are Life Extension Super Digestive Enzymes. You can read about them at
lef.org -- do a search on "super enzymes".

    Hope this helps,
    Tom M

Yogurts I can handle without lactaid.

Overall, I just try to stay away from dairy products.
The Lactaid only works now and again. It is like I build up a tolerance for it really fast (after 2 or 3 uses in a <2 month period)

Sucks because I do like dairy but since I like soy too, it hasn't been too horrible to cut out :)
