It's a good guideline. MOST of the time, I drink over a gallon a day easily....hitting 128oz isn't hard at all. Drink 4 - 32oz bottles per day.

Really it's a pretty pointless chart unless you take into account temperature, activity, sweating, food and other drink intake.

Drink just a bit more than YOU need (not a rough estimate based on averages), less than you need is bad, drinking tons more than you need is unnecessary.

I don't drink as much as I should anyway. I have a very small bladder and end up getting up 5 or 6 times during the night if I drink the recommended 8 cups a day or more.

    ^^^^ This

drinking a lot more than you need can also lead to electrolyte imbalances (remember when they talked about osmosis in Gr 10 science?) and, in extreme cases, hyponatremia a life threatening condition.

If you're a person who doesn't drink enough water to begin with, this chart is a great guideline to get that jump start to drink more water. .

I disagree with this crap. People are over drinking water. It puts stress on all your organs. It's not good to over drink water just like it's not good to under drink. My doctor told me to just go by my pee. If it's yellow, drink. Your pee should be clear. I probably drink about 4 or 5 glasses a day, eat lots of fruit and veggies, 5 cups of coffee, a cup of tea, and that's about it. You get water from food you know, and that counts, it's not "in addition to".

And, as mentioned above, that can change if it's hot, or I'm moving around a lot, I'll drink more. I just do what I need.I don't go by some random chart.

Why? Is running to the bathroom part of your fitness routine?
Or do you mean 'according to that chart I should be drinking around 8 cups....' ?
  • There are other factors to consider. I need a lot more than 6-7 cups of water with the amount I workout or I get dehydrated.

Hydration comes from the foods you eat as well as what you drink. If your urine is dark in color & has a pungent odor drink more. If it's totally colorless drink less. It should be a very light yellow color with no odor.
  • I just drink until my urine is a nice Light kiwi-yellow colour.. I mean that's the most technical way to go about it!! Except, ever since I had kidney problems that hasn't been the case. O_o Ahh.. Oh well.
