How about something completely out there like a bungee jump experience....you know how you can get those gift cards for extreme things like that !
Or something both of you could enjoy like a weekend away or an overnight stay with breakfast at a nice hotel?0 -
Most of my guy friends get homemade cookies and/or candy. I've had zero complaints and now get requests. Another thing that might be cool (depending on how much you want to spend) is some sort of experience: F1 racing, gun range/shooting lesson, etc.0

What does he enjoy doing? If he likes to cook, can you get him a cooking classes somewhere or some kitchen gadets from Williams Sonoma. If he's into Art, get him an art book and passes to a museum, etc.0

You already had my idea. Put the watch in a nice box then wrap it complete with ribbon and bow and put it in his gift basket.0

Check out gifts.com, thewetbar.com, and uncommongoods.com for some ideas0

Anything from his favorite sports team...I don't know of any guy who ever gets tired of more stuff, and if he has all the recent stuff you can go to used/thrift shops or ebay for vintage items...0

lol..you must've met my husband0 -
I just saw really cool mugs on uncommongoods.com - there is a space at the bottom to put cookies. I'm thinking of doing a gift basket that has the mug, flavored hot chocolate and spiced apple cider packets & cookies. I'll have to wait for the mugs to arrive to see what size cookies will fit in the "warmer" area at the bottom of the mug. I think a guy would like something along those lines.0

I was racking my brain over what to get my boyfriend until I found some really nice tungsten rings on Amazon for only $20. He's always complaining about his gold band getting scratched up, and these are practically impossible to scratch. That could be a possible option, they have some really awesome designs for men.
ETA:
This is the one I got him. They have some with really great inlays, but those will scratch over time.

Well, here are things I, (looks down) a man, would like as a gift:
A country ham (http://www.meachamhams.com/)
An Iberian ham (http://hamlovers.com/cat/en/121/0/Small_jamones)
A Yankee ham (http://www.vtsmokeandcure.com/Original-Vermont-Ham.html)
A Honeybaked Ham (http://www.honeybaked.com/)

My friend likes beer. Not cheap regular beer but imports and fancy beer, I usually buy him something like that.0

Is there an old cartoon or tv show he used to enjoy when he was younger? Get him that on DVD. My husband surprised me when he bought me the Are you being Served collection on DVD. I talked about how I used to watch it all the time with my pop pop and I actually cried when I saw what it was. It brought back so many good memories
edit: you would be surprised how many old shows are on DVD. Just watch the reviews to learn if they cut anything for copyright issues. For example, my huband loved Wiseguy and they released it on DVD, but there are about 6 or 7 episdoes missing because there the music was so integral to the episode (the guy was investigating a murder at a music company or something like that) that it could not be removed for the DVD release.
edit: check ebay too. A lot of people have made money transferring their old VHS recordings to DVD that include material that is not on the "official" DVD due to copyright. Remember, back in the day, when they negotiated to use music in a TV show it did not include DVD media release rights.0 -

I would only get him a watch if he already wears one. If not, this new one will just end up in a drawer never to be seen again.0 -
