Goal Setting ?

I hired a trainer today and he asked me to come up with a goal that we can work towards...and I couldn't. I have already achieved the big ones I wanted. Right now I just want to be at my goal weight by next September and I'm only 30lbs from that so that is an easy one. He mentioned running a 10 k (that doesn't interest me) Any suggestions?

Ok, I came up with a goal but need help! I want to lose 2 inches off my waist...what is a reasonable time to expect to accomplish this in?0

You don't need to run a 10k, especially if it doesn't interest you. I had initially lost about 35 lbs by watching my diet and then working out 3 times a week for an hour each session. We did all sorts of things from running a couple of laps around a gym (warm up) to tossing medicine balls, skipping is a good one, pylometric exercises - anything to just shake up the body. Just move, add some weights, lunges, side lunges, there's a gazillon things you can do......oh, don't forget bike riding too (or spin).0

I think if you can identify the two-inch-off-the-waist goal, your trainer can give you a realistic time frame. Maybe you will be able to do that in six months or something, and then choose another. Or maybe only one inch is feasible in the time you have-- I don't have a good sense of that.0

Goal setting is about what YOU want, not the trainer. You are paying them to be your emloyee. He/she can help you with the goals you set - don't let them try to make you do stuff you don't like.
With that said, setting the 2 inches off your waist is a great goal. O wouldn't put a time limit on it - it will be easy to do - and if you limit yourself to a time, then you will find excuses when you find out how easy it is. At least I would.Once you reach that goal, set another.

I suggest setting a goal to do something you cannot do now. For example, I want to start weight lifting soon. I'm maintaining, so that isn't a goal. Being healthy is nice, but how do you measure that improvement in the future. Eventually, I landed on this goal: to be able to life 50 pounds more in a year, than I can now. That may be unreasonable but I'm still doing research and looking for a trainer.
The point is, you may want to consider strength as a goal. In that way, you can set a goal for how much you want to be able to work with in a certain amount of time.0 -
He was just giving the idea of 10K I think as a suggestion to look past just the aesthetics of weight/inches, but also to something outside of just that. I don't like to run either, so that doesn't inspire me. What kind of workouts do you LOVE? What do you enjoy in life that you could maybe do just a little bit better with more training/dedication? Or even just backtrack: why did you get the personal trainer? What were your initial expectations of what you want him to help you with?
For example, I fell in love with cardio kickboxing. Two years later, I may not be at my goal weight yet, but I am a certified Fitness Instructor working towards teaching at a gym as well!0 -
I think goals are important and drive me to keep going. I started with the obvious ones like getting under 200 lbs. I've set fitness goals like running a 5K. I even set silly goals like looking the best I could at my H.S. reunion or 6 pack on my 40th birthday. Anyways, it works for me as I feel lost without something to shoot for. Honestly I dont hit the mark all the time, but I don't care. Right now Im working on my 6 pack for my 40th birthday present, and in a shorter range I WILL be 169.9999 lbs by Friday(my wifes Holiday party). If the 10K isn't your thing its ok. I like the two inches off goal. Believe me dropping a pant size is an awesome feeling!0

My goal is to complete c25k. Maybe you could set a goal to complete a program like that? It doesn't have to be running, since you don't like running, but completing something makes me feel so accomplished, and it's great for confidence.0
