I want to make a low carb smoothie, but using fresh strawberries and plain yogurt puts it at 32 or 36. Any tips on how to get it lower?

I don't know what amounts you're using, and what their individual amount is, but I use 1 C frozen blueberries in mine and it's 19 carbs. I also use fat free milk, again, not sure about the carbs, but that's what I do.
  • Compare the carbs of the yogurt you are using with a Greek yogurt such as Oikos. I love their plain yogurt which has a ton of protein. Oikos might be in your organic aisle @ the grocery.
  • I havent tried these but my best friend swears by them.....

    ORANGE CREAM PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
1 scoop whey protein powder, vanilla flavor, 1/3 cup
    1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
    1 1/2 cups cold water
    1 tablespoon heavy cream
1/4 cup Da Vinci sugar free syrup, vanilla or orange flavor
    1/2 teaspoon orange extract
1/2 teaspoon sugar free orange gelatin powder
1/4 cup granular Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
2-4 drops liquid SweetLeaf stevia, optional *
    Ice cubes
In a small bowl, stir together the protein powder and xanthan gum. Pour the water, cream, syrup, extract, gelatin and sweetener into a blender. Blend for a few seconds. Add the protein powder and blend briefly. With the blender on the highest speed, start feeding ice cubes, one at a time, through the top of the blender until the drink is very thick. Adjust sweetener, if necessary.
    Makes 1 serving
    * The sweetness of Splenda has a tendency to disappear in really cold things. Adding a tiny bit of Stevia helped boost the sweetness. Add to taste.
    With granular Splenda:
Per Serving: 187 Calories; 8g Fat; 19g Protein; 11g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 10g Net Carbs
    With liquid Splenda:
Per Serving: 163 Calories; 8g Fat; 19g Protein; 5g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 4g Net Carbs
This is yummy. It reminds me of a Creamsicle. This makes 2 tall glasses. You could cut the carbs in half by only drinking 1 glass. I strongly suggest that you do use the xanthan gum in this recipe. It thickens it by suspending the crushed ice and lots of air bubbles. Without xanthan gum, you'll end up with more like a slushy where the ice ends up in a big icy chunk in the glass

    STRAWBERRY PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
2 scoops whey protein powder, vanilla flavor, 2/3 cup
    1 teaspoon xanthan gum
    2 1/2 cups cold water
    2 tablespoons heavy cream
2 ounces cream cheese, cut up into small pieces, optional *
1/2 cup Da Vinci sugar free syrup, any flavor
1/4 cup granular Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
    1 teaspoon strawberry extract, optional
4 ounces frozen strawberries, do not thaw
    Ice cubes
In a small bowl, stir together the protein powder and xanthan gum. Pour the water, cream, cream cheese, syrup, sweetener and extract into a blender. Blend for a few seconds. Add the protein powder and blend briefly. With the blender on the highest speed, start feeding frozen strawberries through the hole in the blender cover. Once the berries are all in, start adding ice cubes, one at a time, until the drink is very thick and you can't fit any more into the blender.

This comes out so thick that you may need to pour it through a funnel into the glasses. Otherwise it will run down the side of the blender and make a huge mess. This actually made more than my blender could hold. I had to dump some into a glass to make more room to add more ice because I wanted it a bit colder.

    Makes about 3 huge servings
    * I only put in the cream cheese because I had that much left and it needed to be used up. I don't know if it contributed much to the drink other than some extra carbs and calories. Next time I will leave it out and see how it turns out.
    With granular Splenda:
Per Serving: 194 Calories; 12g Fat; 14g Protein; 9g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 8g Net Carbs
    With liquid Splenda:
Per Serving: 186 Calories; 12g Fat; 14g Protein; 7g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 6g Net Carbs
The secret to this smoothie is the xanthan gum. It thickens it by suspending the crushed ice and lots of air bubbles. Without xanthan gum, you'll end up with more like a slushy where the ice ends up in a big icy chunk in the glass.

Well thanks for the tips everyone. I made my first protien shake today:

    1 scoop whey protein
    a few ice cubes
    1/2 cup water
    2/3 cup frozen strawberries
    3 ounces greek plain yogurt

Ended up being 250 calories, 26 carbs (eeeeee  ), 2 fat, 36 protien, 2 fiber, and 95 sodium.

Kept me full through my workout and untill lunch

Reduce the carbs by using half and half cream or Almond breeze milk. I use 1/2 cup soy milk, ice, pp and 1/4 cup frozen fruit. As i drink mine after a workout the muscles soak the carbs up immediately so 26-2 grams of fiber is pretty decent.

Where do you get xanthan gum? My smoothies always turn out chunky and liquidy
  • Look at that! You still cut it to 26. Keep trying if you aren't happy w/ 26 carbs. These are good carbs and sounds like it kept you full!!
