I have heard that you can loose weight very quickly on a gluten free diet. Anyone have any experience with that or any thoughts. Also open for recipes or products. Thanks!!

I don't think that's accurate at all- at least not in a vague statement like that. You can lose a lot of weight if you have eat a balanced diet and do some simple math: calories in - calories out, whether you're eating gluten or not. Some people cannot eat gluten (myself included!) because of Celiac's disease, or a gluten intolerance and it's not an automatic that if you don't eat gluten you'll lose a lot of weight. That's like saying "If you don't eat carbs you'll lose weight fast"- that was a fad for a while, and while it does work for some people, it's not an automatic.

Just my two cents... take it for what it's worth. :flowerforyou:

*edit: As far as products go, most specifically gluten-free products are more expensive, and significantly higher in calories (and often fat, too) than the "regular" products. There are gluten-free flours for example that cost $6 for a bag of flour and contain over 100 calories in a quarter cup! :noway: Whole Foods sells some gluten-free breads that are about $10 per loaf. Of course there are some that are cheaper, but they're terrible.

You may want to cut back on your gluten intake if you're interested in this and see how that is. In order to cut it out totally you'd have to avoid many salad dressings, sauces, etc. besides just the obvious: breads, pastas, pizza, cake, etc.
  • unless you have celiac disease, it's not really necessary to go gluten free. i also don't think that a gluten free diet aids weight loss anymore than a low-calorie, balanced diet. gluten free diets are extremely restricted, so unless you needed to do it medically, it would probably be hard to stick to. and gluten-free foods (breads, snack foods, etc) are uber expensive!

To each thier own on diet choices I guess, but coming from a place where I have to buy and cook gluten free foods for my wheat intollerant three year old daughter, I would not choose to do a gluten free diet if I didn't have to. For one, GF foods can be expensive. Two, I've read several articles in various magazines that have stated choosing to eat gluten free can create intollereances in your body towards wheat, etc. Whether this is true or not, I do not know. (I would underline that last sentence if I could so I don't get slammed later on).

We've done months on end where our whole family has eaten nothing but GF foods and have not seen a noticeable difference in our weight. I guess you could always try it if you wanted, but I would imagine the moment you start eating regular wheat you will see some kind of gain simply for the fact that wheat is processed differently in your body. I would suggest you do some more research on the matter before trying it.
  • If you're eating a diet that is low in processed food (like foods made with flours) you can, but there are plenty of gluten free processed foods out there. A diet high in whole foods (which makes you body work to break down the food, instead of processed food that is already broken down for you) you will help you lose weight because you're blood sugar will stay at a normal level.
    I hope that helps...

My sister in law went gluten free a few months ago but it is due to a medical condition under doctor recommendation that she is gluten free and she still is. She has lost over 30 lbs and looks and feels great.
My brother (her husband) does not have a medical condition that requires him to be on a gluten free diet, however, he does it now to support her and has last a few lbs himself.

A GF "diet" will not help you lose weight. GF foods are not good for you. If you look at GF pasta vs a whole grain you will see what I mean. GF products are HIGH in calories and high in sugars. They usually have no fiber.
Now if you ate meats, dairy and veggies and left out all processed foods together, no sauces, condiments etc etc then of course you would lose weight but that is also called South BEach Phase 1 :)
If you feel that gluten though makes you sick then you should follow the diet. I highly recomment of course being tested 1st and talking with a nutritionist. Being GF is very very hard and when you start like any food once omitted can cause problems when later re-introduced. I mean I cant even use certain shampoos and make-up..Its in EVERYTHING!
